The high school volleyball season is down to its final two weeks of the regular season. Hanging in the balance are district championships, playoff berths and seeding.
Here’s a rundown of the area landscape heading into Tuesday’s matches, with district records in parentheses:
District 27-6A
Playoff bound: Clemens (7-0), New Braunfels (5-2), Steele (5-2)
On the cusp: San Marcos (2-5), East Central (2-5)
Overview: Clemens travels to New Braunfels on Tuesday needing a win to lock up no worse than a share of the league title. San Marcos and East Central are tied for the final postseason spot, with San Marcos having the inside track thanks to a five-set win over East Central on Oct. 6. The teams square off on Oct. 24, the final day of the regular season.
District 28-6A
Playoff bound: Brandeis (13-1), Reagan (11-2)
On the cusp: Clark (10-4), Madison (9-5), Johnson (8-5)
Overview: Clark can clinch a playoff berth with a win Tuesday vs. Roosevelt. Outside of that, Oct. 24 will be a huge day in this league’s playoff scenario, with Brandeis and Reagan likely facing off for the title and Madison and Johnson meeting for the final postseason spot. Madison won the first meeting vs. Johnson in five sets and Reagan topped Brandeis in four sets on Sept. 22.
District 29-6A
Playoff bound: Harlan (14-0), O’Connor (10-3)
On the cusp: Brennan (9-4), Warren (9-5), Stevens (7-7), Sotomayor (6-7)
Overview: Harlan has already locked up the district crown and is seeking to go unscathed. O’Connor has clinched a playoff berth. Brennan can earn a berth with a win on Tuesday vs. Sotomayor, and Warren can do the same with a loss by Stevens, which plays O’Connor on Tuesday. Stevens and Sotomayor are still mathematically alive, but would have to win out and get some help.
District 26-5A
Playoff bound: New Braunfels Canyon (10-1)
On the cusp: Smithson Valley (8-3), Kerrville Tivy (8-3), Pieper (7-4)
Still alive: Seguin (5-6), Boerne Champion (5-6)
Overview: New Braunfels Canyon can assure itself no worse than a share of the district title with a win Tuesday at Smithson Valley. Kerrville Tivy and Pieper both can collect playoff berths with wins on Tuesday. Seguin and Boerne Champion are mathematically alive but would have to win out — Champion closes with Pieper, Smithson Valley and Tivy and Seguin faces Tivy, Canyon and Smithson Valley.
District 27-5A
Playoff bound: Alamo Heights (13-0), MacArthur (12-1)
On the cusp: Burbank (9-4), Edison (8-6), Sam Houston (7-6)
Overview: Alamo Heights and MacArthur play on Friday and the district title will likely be on the line. Burbank needs one win to secure a playoff spot. Edison and Sam Houston are battling for the final spot, with Edison holding the head-to-head tiebreaker.
District 28-5A
Playoff bound: Southwest (11-0), Harlandale (10-1)
On the cusp: Medina Valley (7-4), South San (6-5), McCollum (5-6)
Overview: Barring any surprises, Southwest will travel to Harlandale on Friday for an encounter that will determine the district title. On that same night, South San and McCollum meet for what likely be the final playoff berth. Medina Valley needs one win to secure a postseason spot.
District 27-4A
Playoff bound: Davenport (10-0), Wimberley (8-2), Navarro (7-3)
On the cusp: Boerne (4-5), Fredericksburg (2-7)
Overview: Davenport has secured no worse than a share of the league crown and can earn it outright with a win Tuesday vs. Fredericksburg. Wimberley and Navarro meet Friday in a contest that likely will determine second place. Boerne needs a win and a loss by Fredericksburg to sew up the last playoff bid.
District 28-4A
Playoff bound: Cuero (10-0), La Vernia (8-1), Gonzales (7-3)
On the cusp: YWLA (4-6), Fox Tech (2-7), Memorial (2-7)
Overview: Cuero and La Vernia meet on Oct. 24 for what likely will be for the district title. YWLA can lock up the final playoff spot with a win vs. Fox Tech and a loss by Memorial on Tuesday.
District 29-4A
Playoff bound: Floresville (9-0), Devine (8-1)
On the cusp: Pleasanton (5-4), Carrizo Springs (5-5), Somerset (4-6)
Overview: Floresville and Devine are heading for a showdown on Oct. 24 that will probably determine the league title. Pleasanton and Carrizo Springs each can nab berths with a win and a loss by Somerset.
District 5-3A
Playoff bound: Blanco (7-0), Ingram (7-1), Llano (4-4)
On the cusp: Comfort (3-4)
Overview: Blanco and Ingram face off on Tuesday for the district championship. Comfort can secure the league’s final playoff spot with a win.
District 26-3A
Playoff bound: Randolph (9-0), Marion (7-2), Cole (5-5), Luling (5-5)
Overview: Randolph can lock up the district championship with a win vs. Marion on Tuesday.
District 27-3A
Playoff bound: Poth (5-0), Jourdanton (4-1), West Campus (3-3)
On the cusp: Karnes City (2-4)
Overview: Poth travels to Jourdanton on Tuesday with first place on the line. Karnes City can clinch the final playoff with a win vs. Poteet.
District 28-3A
Playoff bound: Crystal City (6-1), Hondo (5-2), Natalia (5-2), Lytle (3-4)
Overview: This week will go a long way in determining the district champion as first-place Crystal City faces Natalia on Tuesday and Hondo on Friday, teams that both are one game back in second place.
District 29-2A
Playoff bound: Johnson City (5-0), Stockdale (5-1), Falls City (4-2)
On the cusp: Stacey (1-5)
Overview: Stacey can secure the final playoff berth with a win vs. Lee Academy on Tuesday. Johnson City and Stockdale appear on course to play for the league crown on Oct. 24.
District 30-2A
Playoff bound: Harper (5-0), La Pryor (4-1)
On the cusp: Sabinal (2-4), Center Point (2-4), Brackett (1-5)
Overview: Harper and La Pryor meet for first place on Tuesday, while Brackett and Sabinal square off in a contest that likely will have playoff implications. probably should determine the league’s final playoff berth.
District 30-1A
Playoff bound: D’Hanis (5-0), Utopia (4-1)
On the cusp: Medina, Leakey
Overview: D’Hanis, last year’s UIL Class 1A state finalist, is zeroing in on another league crown and has a key contest on Friday vs. Utopia. Medina and Leakey will battle for the final spot.
