H.S. soccer: Five area teams on verge of earning UIL state tournament berth

Five area soccer teams are only one win from advancing to the UIL state tournament next week at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.

The boys and girls teams from Reagan and Boerne High and the Boerne Champion girls squad all won their regional semifinal contests on Friday.

Each team plays Saturday – Reagan in San Antonio, Boerne Champion in Corpus Christi and Boerne High in McAllen – with a state berth on the line.

Boys

Region IV-6A: Reagan scored early and often and cruised past Laredo Alexander 6-0 at Comalander Stadium. The Rattlers (20-3-3) will play Austin Lake Travis (21-3) at 3 p.m. Saturday for a berth to the UIL Class 6A state tournament.

Pato Tenorio netted two goals and Aidan Phelan, Andre Huereca, Jacob Perry and Chika John added one apiece as Reagan advanced to a regional final for the fourth time in the past six completed seasons and the eighth time overall.

In the second regional-semifinal contest, Ben Platt scored two goals and Alex Bethke had one as Lake Travis slipped past Harlan 3-1. It was the second year in a row that the Cavaliers have defeated Harlan in this round. They prevailed 2-1 in 2021.

Bethke and Platt each scored a goal only four minutes apart midway through the second half to snap a 1-1 tie. In 2021, Lake Travis scored twice in 90 seconds to rally for a 2-1 win.

Avery Richards scored the lone goal for Harlan (23-3).

Region IV-4A: Boerne moved another step closer in a pursuit for a second straight state championship, riding a powerful display of offense to romp past Progreso 8-1 in McAllen.

The Greyhounds square off vs. Taylor at noon Saturday.

Sam Theiss scored three first-half goals, Adrian Cuervo added two and Justin Moore, Joe Ballenger and Jesse Gonzales put in one goal apiece as the Greyhounds turned a 1-0 deficit only three minutes into the contest into a rout. Boerne scored four goals in each half.

Girls

Region IV-6A: Cami Jordan scored two goals and Emma O’Brien and Taylor Jernigan added one apiece as Reagan outlasted Brennan 4-1 in overtime at Comalander Stadium.

The Rattlers (22-2-3) will face Austin Westlake (19-3) in the regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday. Westlake topped O’Connor 2-0 in the opening regional-semifinal matchup.

O’Brien netted her goal with 12½ minutes left to play in regulation to tie it at 1-1 and force overtime. Brennan (23-3-2) grabbed a 1-0 advantage 2½ minutes into the second half on Jordan Bearden’s goal.

Jordan, who a month ago was cleared to play for the first time this season after rehabbing an ACL injury, scored the game-winner for Reagan a little more than three minutes into overtime. Jernigan and Jordan each added scores to put the contest out of reach.

Westlake moved a win from a trip to state thanks to Addison Bray, who pumped in two goals. The two scores were more than enough for the Chaparrals, who registered their fourth straight shutout during the playoffs. Westlake has blanked Round Rock, Smithson Valley, Clark and O’Connor.

Region IV-5A: In Corpus Christi, Mack Arendall scored twice and Skyleigh Arnold and Emily Peters had a goal apiece as Boerne Champion used a big first half to grab control en route to a 4-2 triumph vs. McAllen.

The Chargers (19-3-1) advanced to the regional final for the first time since 2017 and fifth time overall. They will tangle with defending state champion and district rival Dripping Springs (25-0), which rolled past Gregory-Portland 3-1, at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cabaniss Field.

Dripping Springs has won 44 in a row since a scoreless tie vs. Alamo Heights on Feb. 2, 2021, and is unbeaten in its past 52 games (51-0-1). Two of the Tigers’ wins have been against Boerne Champion – 2-0 on Jan. 25 and 2-1 on Feb. 25.

Boerne Champion gets another opportunity for a breakthrough after notching a 3-1 advantage at halftime. McAllen (20-9-2) closed within 3-2 in the second half on a penalty kick following a handball inside the penalty area, but wouldn’t get closer.

Arendall iced the game with a goal off a counterattack with 70 seconds remaining.

Region IV-4A: Hannah Bowen and Gigi Hernandez each had two goals as Boerne had no trouble vs. Santa Gertrudis, steamrolling to a 7-0 decision in McAllen.

The Greyhounds will play Corpus Christi Calallen at 10 a.m. Saturday for a state bid. Calallen, a state finalist in 2021 and the defending regional champion, toppled Wimberley 4-1 in Friday’s other semifinal. Calallen edged Boerne 1-0 in overtime in the regional semifinals a year ago.

Boerne earned a chance to avenge the setback, building a 4-0 margin at halftime and never looking back. Taylor Hudson, A’Marie Ramirez and Tommie Rand each contributed a goal for the Greyhounds, who are in the regional final for the fifth time in the past seven completed seasons and sixth time overall.
