H.S. mailbag: News and notes from around the San Antonio area sports landscape

FacebookTweetPin

From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
2,000:
Career assists for Reagan sophomore setter Lauren Garcia, who reached the milestone during the Rattlers’ five-set win vs. Brennan in a UIL Class 6A Division I bidistrict contest. Garcia had 58 assists as Reagan (32-13) rallied for a 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-12 triumph at Northside Sports Gym.

1,000: Total kills for Brennan senior middle blocker Giana Brown, who attained the mark during a District 28-6A match vs. O’Connor on Oct. 11. The 6-foot-1 Brown had 12 kills in the match vs. Reagan and finished with 308 on the season.

Coleman

100: Career wins for La Vernia volleyball coach Danielle Coleman, who accomplished the feat during the Bears’ sweep of Somerset in a Class 4A Division I bidistrict encounter on Monday. She is in her third season at La Vernia and her first squad in 2022 advanced to the Region IV-4A final before falling in five sets to state power Bellville. Coleman previously was an assistant coach for New Braunfels Canyon’s 2021 state semifinalist and 2020 regional finalist teams. She was a libero on Reagan’s 2007 and 2008 regional finalist squads and played collegiately at Ole Miss and Texas State.

46: Years that had passed since Burbank last won a district championship in football before ending the drought with last week’s 64-7 win vs. Edison. It marked quite a turnaround for the Bulldogs, who once lost 50 games in a row between 1989 and 1993. Burbank went 10-1 in 1978, going perfect in the regular season before falling to eventual state semifinalist Churchill 30-6 in bidistrict. The squad was coached by the late Jerry Janert and featured quarterback John Zertuche, wide receiver David Vela and running backs David Gonzales and Fred Rodriguez, who each rushed for more than 1,000 yards. Vela played at Southwest Texas (now Texas State), where he was an All-American and helped the Bobcats win NCAA Division II national championships in 1981 and 1982.
