From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2,000: Career digs for Davenport senior libero Logan Strong, who reached the milestone during the Wolves’ match vs. Canyon Lake on Oct. 8. Strong, who is committed to Grand Canyon University in Arizona, is believed to be only the 18th player in San Antonio-area history to accomplish the feat. A year ago, she had an instrumental role in Davenport capturing the UIL Class 4A state championship. The Wolves open defense of their title with a bidistrict contest vs. Austin Eastside at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in San Marcos.
1,000: Total assists for McCollum junior setter Maddy Ruiz, who attained the standard during the Cowgirls’ match vs. Southwest Legacy on Oct. 23. The milestone was the second in as many weeks for the McCollum program. Laila Sanchez, a senior defensive specialist, collected her 1,000th dig during a match vs. Harlandale on Oct. 15.
9: Years that had passed since Johnson last won a district title in volleyball before doing so with Tuesday’s win vs. Clark. The Jaguars this season finished tied for first place with Reagan.
In 2015, Johnson also shared the league championship with Reagan. That team was coached by Nicole Blakeman, advanced to the regional quarterfinals before falling to eventual state tournament qualifier New Braunfels Canyon, and featured seven Division I prospects — Kylie Rittimann (Texas Tech), Brooke Adkisson (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, beach), Kaylyn Winkler (Northeastern, Notre Dame and SMU), Addie Bryant (South Carolina), Brianna Muller (Alabama-Birmingham), Rachel Morse (Alabama-Birmingham) and Adriana Pereira (Alabama-Birmingham, beach) — and at least 11 who played volleyball in college. Meghan Parker (Angelo State), Gabriela Moran (Texas A&M-Kingsville), Julia Deais (St. Mary’s) and Adonica Wright (Oklahoma Baptist) played on the NCAA Division II level.
