From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career digs for Floresville senior libero and UTSA commit Giada Obregon, who reached the milestone during the Jaguars’ match vs. Navarro on Sept. 6.
350: Career wins for Devine volleyball coach Leigh Anne McIver, who reached the mark during the Arabians’ 25-18, 25-17, 25-15 triumph vs. Somerset on Sept. 27. McIver is in her 16th season as a head coach and 11th at Devine. She previously coached five seasons at Fort Bend Bush, near Houston.
300: Total wins for Johnson City volleyball coach Heather Wilson, who accomplished the feat during the Eagles’ sweep of Center Point on Sept. 27. Wilson is in her 11th season as a head coach, all at Johnson City.
100: Career wins for D’Hanis volleyball coach Kristina Finger, who obtained the standard with the Cowgirls’ 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15 decision vs. Medina on Tuesday. Finger is in her fourth season as head coach at D’Hanis and in 2022 led her team to the UIL Class 1A state final.
92: Consecutive district volleyball matches won by Poth before falling to Stockdale 27-25, 25-23, 25-18 on Tuesday. It was the Pirettes’ first district setback since losing to Goliad on Oct. 20, 2015. The 92 straight league victories rank as the third-longest in San Antonio-area history, trailing only Devine (112 wins) and Poth (97 wins).
