Notebook
State’s finest: Stockdale’s LeAnn Wise and Blanco’s Tylee Shires were named to the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State volleyball first team. They were the only area athletes to earn the distinction.
Wise, a 6-foot-1 sophomore outside hitter, was tabbed as the player of the year after recording 868 kills, 392 digs and 120 aces. She led Stockdale to its first state title in November, racking up a state-record (all classifications) 47 kills in the final vs. Boyd. The 47 kills are a San Antonio-area record, surpassing the previous mark of 45 set by Blanco’s Reagan Rogers (2014) and Castle Hills First Baptist’s Erin Hickman (2002), and are believed to be a state record, equaling the total established by Lindsay’s Nicole Fleitman vs. Milano in the Region II-2A final in 2014. Wise concluded the season with three straight matches with at least 40 kills. She had 43 vs. Industrial in the regional final and 40 vs. West in the state semifinals.
Shires had 597 kills, averaging five per set, and a .283 hitting percentage and helped Blanco claim a share of the District 5-3A championship. She is signed with the University of Arizona (beach volleyball).
Stockdale’s Laura Gonzales was the TSWA’s Class 3A coach of the year and Wimberley’s Misty Fletcher-Remmers, a La Vernia High School graduate who previously was head coach at Navarro and East Central, is the 4A coach of the year.
