From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
1,500:
Career points for Sotomayor junior guard Jordan Pete, who reached the milestone during the Wildcats’ 60-50 win in District 28-6A play vs. defending Region IV-6A champion Brennan on Jan. 8.

500: Career wins for Alamo Heights girls soccer coach Chris Sharp, who accomplished the feat during the Mules’ 8-0 triumph vs. Bastrop at the San Marcos Showcase on Jan. 3. He joined Frankie Whitlock, who coached at Reagan, Churchill and Judson, and Saint Mary’s Hall’s Brian Kaestner as the only San Antonio area girls coaches to reach the mark. Sharp is in his 29th season overall as a head coach and 25th at Alamo Heights, which he led to the UIL state tournament in 2006 and 2018.

300: Total wins for Johnson girls soccer coach Scott Stone, who attained the standard during the Jaguars’ 5-0 decision vs. McCollum at the Seguin Invitational on Jan. 10. Stone is in his seventh season at Johnson and 20th overall. He previously coached at O’Connor and led the Panthers to the regional final in 2001 and 2016.

300: Career wins for Steele boys soccer coach Jason Burnett, who accomplished the feat during the Knights’ victory vs. Taylor at the Seguin Invitational on Jan. 4. Burnett is in his sixth season at Steele. He previously coached at Buda Hays.

250: Overall wins for LEE girls soccer coach Erik Stolhandske, who attained mark during the Volunteers’ 5-1 victory vs. Laredo United at North East ISD Showcase on Jan. 10. Stolhandske is in his ninth season at LEE and 16th overall. He previously coached at MacArthur and led the Brahmas to the UIL state tournament in 2016 and regional tournament in 2011 and 2012.

8: Area volleyball athletes selected to participate in the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star match. The contest will be played in conjunction with the organization’s summer convention on July 14-17 in Arlington. Reagan’s Shayne Zammiello, O’Connor’s Jaylyn Tuiasosopo and Boerne Champion’s Taylor Fenton are scheduled to play for the Blue team in the Class 6A-5A match. Davenport’s Alexis Dahl was named to the Blue team and Ingram’s Cadence Woodruff, Floresville’s Maddie Harden and Makenna Hertless and La Vernia’s Paisley Pavliska are on the Red squad for the Class 4A-1A match.
Reagan’s Mya Allen (6A-5A), Johnson City’s Casey Loewer and Ava Craig, Floresville’s Giada Obregon and Stockdale’s Jamila Zepeda (4A-1A) were named as Legacy All-Stars, which honors 40 of the state’s top graduating seniors.

State’s finest:
Stockdale’s LeAnn Wise and Blanco’s Tylee Shires were named to the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State volleyball first team. They were the only area athletes to earn the distinction.

Wise

Wise, a 6-foot-1 sophomore outside hitter, was tabbed as the player of the year after recording 868 kills, 392 digs and 120 aces. She led Stockdale to its first state title in November, racking up a state-record (all classifications) 47 kills in the final vs. Boyd. The 47 kills are a San Antonio-area record, surpassing the previous mark of 45 set by Blanco’s Reagan Rogers (2014) and Castle Hills First Baptist’s Erin Hickman (2002), and are believed to be a state record, equaling the total established by Lindsay’s Nicole Fleitman vs. Milano in the Region II-2A final in 2014. Wise concluded the season with three straight matches with at least 40 kills. She had 43 vs. Industrial in the regional final and 40 vs. West in the state semifinals.

Shires had 597 kills, averaging five per set, and a .283 hitting percentage and helped Blanco claim a share of the District 5-3A championship. She is signed with the University of Arizona (beach volleyball).

Stockdale’s Laura Gonzales was the TSWA’s Class 3A coach of the year and Wimberley’s Misty Fletcher-Remmers, a La Vernia High School graduate who previously was head coach at Navarro and East Central, is the 4A coach of the year.
