From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
900: Career strikeouts for Center Point senior pitcher Kaylee Blackledge. A Texas Tech softball signee, Blackledge accomplished the feat by striking out 15 and tossing a perfect game in the Pirates’ 9-0 win vs. Goldthwaite on April 18. It was the fifth time this season that Blackledge either had a perfect game or a no-hitter. Center Point’s season ended Thursday with a 4-1 loss to Milano in a Class 2A bidistrict series. Blackledge had 10 strikeouts, scattered three hits, and allowed four runs (none earned). She finished her career with 936 strikeouts.
500: Career wins for Antonian baseball coach David Collenback. He reached the milestone during the Apaches’ 4-3 victory vs. Houston St. Thomas on April 21. Collenback, a Churchill graduate, previously coached at O’Connor and led the Panthers to the 2013 UIL state tournament, 441 wins, 10 district titles and 19 playoff appearances in 21 seasons before retiring in 2019. He returned to coaching after a one-year hiatus and has coached the past three seasons at Antonian.
23: Years since LEE last made the UIL softball playoffs and MacArthur won a district championship in baseball before both ended the respective droughts in the past week. LEE clinched District 28-6A’s fourth and final berth with a 12-7 win vs. Marshall on April 22 and MacArthur grabbed a share of the District 27-5A championship with Thursday’s 15-0 win vs. Highlands, both achievements that neither had accomplished since 2000.
18: Area athletes named All-State first team by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization (TASCO). LEE’s Jesus Blanco and Reagan’s Jack Hilliard made the Class 6A team, Southwest’s Adrian Franco and Edson Gonzalez and Alamo Heights’ Ethan Ball and Alexander Bailey earned spots on the 5A squad, and Boerne’s Noah LeMaster and Jess Gonzales and Davenport’s Victor Gonzalez made the 4A club.
On the girls side, Reagan’s Lauren Mueller and New Braunfels’ Madison Creswell made the 6A team, Smithson Valley’s Wrilyn Shippey, Arianna Monnin and Sabrina Taber and Southwest’s Payton Maldonado were on 5A squad, while Boerne’s Lily Griffith and Madeline Davis and Davenport’s Rylee Reisdorph were selected to the 4A team.
Southwest’s Juan Romero and Boerne’s Michael Strong were chosen as the Region IV-5A and Region IV-4A boys coaches of the year, respectively. Smithson Valley’s Jason Adkins and Davenport’s Ben Morrison were the Region IV-5A and Region IV-4A girls coaches of the year, respectively.
5: Days until the start of the UIL baseball playoffs. Bidistrict games/series can begin on May 3 and must be completed by May 6. The state tournament is June 7-10 at the University of Texas’ Disch-Falk Field and Round Rock’s Dell Diamond. D’Hanis is the defending Class 1A state champion.
