From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
250: Career wins for MacArthur softball coach Mike Alfaro, who reached the milestone during the Brahmas’ forfeited victory vs. Sam Houston on March 31. Alfaro is in his ninth season at MacArthur and previously was head coach at Southside and Cornerstone.
35: Goals scored this season by Johnson sophomore forward Camila Palacios, a school record. Palacios surpassed the previous mark of 34 that was shared by Courtney Trimble (2016) and Mabry Williams (2022).
23-6 3/4: Reagan senior Jayden Bagley’s distance in the long jump at the Alamo Heights Mule Relays on March 23. The effort was a school record and marked the second time this season he has reached the 23-foot barrier. Bagley recorded a 23-0 at the Smithson Valley Relays on March 4. The previous school record is believed to be 22-4 by Ty Summers at the District 26-5A (now 6A) championships on April 11, 2014.
18: Consecutive shutouts registered by the Alamo Heights girls soccer team. The Mules (20-1-3) didn’t allow a goal after a 2-2 tie with Wimberley on Jan. 13, had 21 shutouts in 24 games, and yielded only four goals. Alamo Heights’ season ended when it lost in penalty kicks to Leander in the Class 5A second round on March 28 after the teams went scoreless through regulation and overtime.
13.96: Brennan senior Kyree Wilson’s time in placing in fifth place in the 110-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays on April 1. The effort was a school record and a personal best. He clocked a 13.98 in the prelims at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium in Austin a day earlier.
