From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
800: Career strikeouts for Center Point senior softball pitcher Kaylee Blackledge, who reached the milestone by striking out 11 during the Pirates’ 8-4 loss to Johnson City on March 15. A Texas Tech signee, Blackledge once recorded 26 strikeouts in a game vs. Junction during the 2022 season.
400: Career victories for Seguin softball coach John Garcia, who accomplished the feat during the Matadors’ 8-3 decision vs. Leander at the Seguin tournament on March 3. Garcia is in his 19th season at Seguin and 21st overall. He previously coached at Floresville.
350: Wins for Southwest softball coach Sandra Hernandez, who garnered the accolade during the Dragons’ 8-6 triumph vs. Flower Mound at the Bayou City tournament on Feb. 18 in Rosenberg, near Houston. Hernandez is in her 15th season at her alma mater, which she guided to the UIL Class 5A (now 6A) state tournament in 2014 and the Region IV-5A semifinals in 2009 and 2011.

In memoriam: Bernice Voigt, a longtime area high school volleyball coach, died on March 13. She was 63.
A funeral mass was held on March 21.
Voigt was head coach at Navarro, Marion, Gonzales and Lockhart during a career that spanned more than 30 years. She led Marion to the Region IV-3A final in 2011 before falling to eventual state champion Poth. She also worked at Wagner and Schertz John Paul II, where she was a teacher and assistant coach for volleyball and softball at the time of her death.
On the move: Central Catholic soccer coach Edward Cartee has been hired as head men’s coach at NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in California. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished with a 4-3-5 record in the fall, but canceled the final month of the season after a hazing incident.
Cartee coached at Central Catholic for 11 seasons, guiding his teams to five TAPPS Division I state championships (2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) and a 158-49-22 record. The Buttons lost in the state final last month to Plano Prestonwood in penalty kicks, reached the state semifinals on two other occasions (2021 and 2013) and the regional finals twice (2022 and 2016).
A former All-American player at Trinity, Cartee was an assistant coach the past 11 seasons at his alma mater. The Tigers went 189-29-16 and earned 10 NCAA Division III national tournament berths and 10 conference titles during that tenure.
