From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
500: Career strikeouts for Fredericksburg softball pitcher Avery Holland. A senior, she reached the milestone during the Battlin’ Billies’ 9-0 win vs. Cedar Park at the Tuck Memorial tournament in Dripping Springs on Feb. 23. Holland allowed two hits and struck out 13 in five innings during the contest.
150: Career wins for Steele girls soccer coach Leslie Lock, who accomplished the feat during the Knights’ 4-2 triumph vs. Clemens on Feb. 21. Lock is in her fifth season at Steele and 15th overall. She previously coached at Bastrop, Gainesville and Jay.
150: Total victories for Canyon Lake girls soccer coach Kara Stracener, who reached the mark during the Hawks’ 3-0 decision vs. Judson at the Harlandale tournament on Jan. 7. Stracener is in her fifth season at Canyon Lake and 12th overall. She previously coached seven seasons at Johnson, leading the Jaguars to their first district championship and UIL Class 6A state tournament berth in 2013.
75: Goals scored this season by Jefferson senior forward Arianna Solis, believed to be the most ever by a San Antonio area soccer player, male or female. TMI’s Piper Lee previously had the boys and overall records with 71 goals in 1994. Solis scored eight goals during the Mustangs’ 10-0 win Tuesday vs. Sam Houston — her second game in a row with eight goals — to surpass the previous single-season girls mark of 69 by Highlands’ Catalina Canizalez in 2018. Earlier this season, Solis netted an area record-tying nine goals vs. Brackenridge.
