From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
450: Career wins for LEE boys soccer coach David Rogers, who reached the milestone during the Volunteers’ 2-1 decision vs. Madison on Feb. 3. Rogers is the area’s second-winningest boys coach, trailing only former Alamo Heights coach Bruce Fink (551 wins), and has led LEE (2021), Boerne Champion (2011) and Boerne (2006) to UIL state championships. He also coached Denton Ryan to the state semifinals in 2001 and was an assistant coach on Granbury’s 1999 state championship team.
350: Total wins for New Braunfels Canyon boys soccer coach Rob Rush, who accomplished the feat during the Cougars’ 1-0 victory vs. Leander at the Copa Akins tournament on Jan. 12. Rush, who has coached at Canyon for 25 years, was inducted into the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization’s Hall of Honor in 2016.
250: Overall victories for Harlan boys soccer coach Humberto Atilano, who reached the plateau during the Hawks’ 6-0 triumph vs. Taft on Feb. 11. Atilano is in his fifth season at Harlan, which he has guided to the Region IV-6A tournament in each of the past two seasons, and previously was head coach of Boerne High’s boys and girls teams. He led the Boerne girls to the Class 4A state final in 2017 and state semifinals in 2015. Atilano was also assistant coach on Boerne Champion girls’ 2009 state semifinalist team.
100: Career goals for O’Connor senior forward Malia Dominguez, who attained the mark during the Panthers’ 3-0 win vs. Holmes on Feb. 11. She’s the 47th area girls player to accomplish the feat and third from O’Connor, joining Tameka Sumter and Sarah Yoder.
100: Total wins for Boerne boys soccer coach Michael Strong, who garnered the milestone during his team’s 6-0 victory on Feb. 10. Strong is in his fifth season with the Greyhounds, who he has guided to Class 4A state titles in each of the past two seasons. He coached Boerne’s girls team for one season in 2019, leading it to a 19-3-2 record and the third round of the playoffs. Strong was a standout player at Alamo Heights and led the Mules to the 2003 state finals. He holds Alamo Heights’ records for goals scored in a season and career, and in 2010 was selected to the UIL’s All-Century team. Strong played collegiately at Kentucky.
62: Goals scored this season by San Antonio Christian senior forward Kaylee Tarver. A Mary Hardin-Baylor signee, she reached the mark with four goals during the Lions’ 11-0 win vs. TMI on Tuesday, becoming only the sixth area girls player to score 60 goals in a season. Highlands’ Catalina Canizalez (69 goals in 2018), Harlandale’s Ingrid Garcia (68 in 2017), LEE’s Laura Rodriguez (64 in 1989), Harlandale’s Jazmin Baltazar (63 in 2017) and Bandera’s Nikole Gase (60 in 2009) also accomplished the feat.
9: Goals scored by Jefferson senior forward Arianna Solis during the Mustangs’ 14-0 win vs. Brackenridge on Feb. 9. The total is an area record, tying her with Saint Mary’s Hall’s Hunter Hoelscher, who tallied nine goals vs. St. Anthony on Feb. 18, 2022.
4: Days until the start of the UIL baseball season. Teams across the state can compete in their first official game on Feb. 20. The state tournament is June 7-10 at the University of Texas’ Disch-Falk Field and Round Rock’s Dell Diamond. D’Hanis is the defending Class 1A state champion and Reagan was a 6A finalist a year ago.
