From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2,000: Career points for Lytle senior’s Calyssa Sevier, who reached the milestone during the Pirates’ 77-22 win vs. Dilley on Tuesday. Sevier is the fourth area girls player this season to accomplish the feat, joining Clemens’ Aysia Proctor, Boerne’s Jamie Ruede and Reagan’s Samantha Wagner.
1,500: Career points for Providence junior guard Kalysta Martin. She reached the plateau by scoring 26 points in a 37-31 win vs. Brownsville St. Joseph on Jan. 27. Martin earned TAPPS All-State honors a year ago after averaging 27.1 points, 17.4 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, 4.4 assists and 3.9 steals.
100: Career goals for Boerne senior forward Kylie Combs, who reached the milestone with three goals during the Greyhounds’ 6-0 win vs. Fredericksburg on Jan. 27. Combs is the 45th area girls player to attain the mark and sixth from Boerne High School, joining Mary Kate Snelling, Lexi Truitt, Emily Blaettner, Brianna Barrera and Paige Marcell.
Notebook
Hall worthy: Sotomayor High School girls basketball coach Kelli Goble will be inducted into the Angelo State University Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 18. She will be inducted along with football coaching legends Grant Teaff and Phil Danaher, track and field athlete Harold Ledet and longtime athletic department employee Ola McCorkle.
Goble will be the ninth individual with ties to the San Antonio area to earn the honor, joining Kirby Jameson (Clark, volleyball coach), Amy Bippert Bohensky (Medina Valley, track and field), Ned Cox (Roosevelt, football), Tracy Hastings (Madison, basketball coach), Dorothy May Ortiz (New Braunfels Canyon, soccer), the late Ed Messbarger (former St. Mary’s University men’s basketball coach), Mike Smierciak (Clemens, track and field) and the late Greg Stokes (Randolph, football).
A four-year starter at point guard, Goble ranks first in Angelo State history in career 3-pointers made (268) and attempted (736), second in assists (363) and 10th in points (1,253). She helped the Rambelles earn three NCAA Division II national tournament appearances, two Lone Star Conference championships and three LSC South Division crowns. Goble is in her first season at Northside ISD’s Sotomayor, which opened in the fall, after previously coaching at Taft, where she led the Raiders to four UIL Class 6A playoff appearances in eight seasons.
Splash town: San Antonio will be an epicenter for swimming and diving over the next two weeks.
Things get started Friday and Saturday with the Region VII-6A and Region VII-5A championships at North East ISD’s Davis Natatorium and Walker Pool and Southwest ISD Aquatic Center, respectively.
The VII-6A diving competition starts at 5 p.m. Friday at Davis Natatorium. Swimming prelims are at 4 p.m. and the swimming finals at 2 p.m. Saturday. The VII-5A meet begins at 10 a.m. Friday with swimming prelims. Diving begins 10 minutes after the conclusion of the swimming prelims, while the swimming finals are at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The UIL Class 6A and 5A state contests are Feb. 17-18 at University of Texas’ Jamail Center in Austin.
The VII-4A meet was last week and the UIL Class 4A state championship is Feb. 9-10 at Davis Natatorium.
The TAPPS state meets are Feb. 6-8 at Davis Natatorium, with Division III, Division II and Division I meets contested in order.
