From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2,000: Career points for Clemens senior guard Aysia Proctor, who reached the milestone during the Buffaloes’ 62-53 win vs. New Braunfels on Jan. 20. Proctor, a UTSA signee, joins Tanya Sanderson as the only Clemens girls players to accomplish the feat and is the third area player this season to do so. Reagan’s Samantha Wagner and Boerne’s Jaime Ruede also reached the mark.
1,000: Career points for Harlan junior Aniya Joseph, who reached the plateau during the Hawks’ 51-47 win vs. Warren on Tuesday. The scoring total also includes Joseph’s time while playing at Hobbs High School in New Mexico.
300: Career wins for Alamo Heights boys basketball coach Andrew Brewer, who reached the mark during the Mules’ 52-26 decision vs. Edison on Jan. 20. Brewer is in his 12th season at Alamo Heights, his alma mater, and led the Mules to the UIL Class 5A state tournament in 2018. He previously coached for two seasons at The Winston School in Dallas.
46: Points scored by Warren senior Jaylen Crocker during the Warriors’ 82-45 triumph vs. Jay on Jan. 21. The total is a school record, surpassing the previous mark of 44 established by his brother Tony Crocker during a game vs. Austin Bowie in 2005.
9: Area athletes selected to the Texas High School Coaches Association Super Elite volleyball team. Alamo Heights’ Hannah Whittingstall and Thea Carter and New Braunfels Canyon’s Megan Hawkins made the Class 5A squad. Davenport’s Talan Dodson, Floresville’s Paisley Pavliska and Navarro’s Taylor Helms earned spots on the 4A team and D’Hanis’ Mabry Herrmann, Jolie Frosch and Peyton Burell made the 1A club.
Whittingstall (5A) and Herrmann (1A) also made the Texas Sports Writers Association’s All-State team. They were the only area players to earn the honor.
4: LEE’s spot in the latest United Soccer Coaches’ national rankings. The Volunteers (11-0-1), who have advanced to two of the past three UIL Class 6A state tournaments — winning the title in 2021 and finishing as runner-ups in 2019 — are the only area team to make the list.
