From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,785: Career points for Warren senior forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, a school record. Crocker-Johnson, who signed with Arkansas-Little Rock, surpassed the previous mark of 1,750 by Isaiah Thomas and headlines a list that includes professional players Taurean Prince (NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves), Marcus Keene (SIG Strasbourg of French LNB Pro A) and Tony Crocker (Europe and Turkey). Keene recently scored 24 points in an 84-81 win vs. Boulogne-Levallois and Victor Wembanyama, the presumed No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. Crocker-Johnson earlier this season also became the Warriors’ career leader in rebounds.
400: Career wins for Boerne Champion boys basketball coach Chris Adamek, who reached the milestone during the Chargers’ victory vs. Sotomayor on Dec. 16. A Boerne graduate and member of the 1990 state finalist basketball squad, Adamek is in his fifth season at Champion and previously coached at Harlandale and Three Rivers. He guided Champion to UIL Class 5A state tournament a year ago.
3: Area athletes — Cornerstone’s Nayeli Gonzalez and Taylor Anderson and Alamo Heights’ Hannah Whittingstall — named to Volleyball magazine’s All-America team. Gonzalez made the first team, Whittingstall earned a spot on the second team and Anderson earned honorable mention. It was the third All-American team that Gonzalez, who is signed with Iowa State, has been tabbed to. She made MaxPreps’ first team and justwomenssports.com’s second team. Whittingstall, who signed with SMU, previously made the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)’s All-America first team. Taylor, who is headed to Purdue, made MaxPreps’ second team.
2: Area athletes — Cornerstone’s Reagan Elizondo and Boerne Geneva’s Karynn Garrow — tabbed to Volleyball magazine’s Fab 50 beach squad, which recognizes the nation’s top seniors. Elizondo and Garrow both signed with Grand Canyon. Pieper’s Meagan Faubel made the publication’s list of top 25 underclassmen.
2: Area athletes — Boerne Champion’s Bexon Harrison and Brandeis’ Grace Goldhammer — who were picked on the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association’s All-State first team for water polo. Boerne Champion’s Will Harrison was named the organization’s newcomer of the year.
