500: Career wins for O’Connor girls basketball coach Karmen Wilson, who reached the milestone during the Panthers’ 58-35 victory vs. Jay on Dec. 10. Wilson, who played at Angelo State and is still No. 2 in school history for single-season free-throw percentage (88.7), is in her 25th season as a head coach, all at O’Connor. She guided the Panthers to the Region IV-6A final in 2015.
23: Area athletes named to Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State volleyball team. Brandeis’ Emma Halstead and Clark’s Arianna Roberson made the Class 6A squad; New Braunfels Canyon’s Megan Hawkins and Maya Jones and Alamo Heights’ Hannah Whittingstall and Thea Carter earned spots on 5A team; and Davenport’s Ashtan Dodson and Talan Dodson, Fredericksburg’s Zoe Aldrich and Clara Pluenneke, La Vernia’s Bailey Schievelbein, Pleasanton’s Sadie McAda, Navarro’s Taylor Helms and Boerne’s Tori Adams landed on 4A club. Poth’s Melina Gonzalez and Ingram’s Madison McClintock are on the 3A team, Johnson City’s Ivy Swafford and Ava Craig are on 2A team, while Mabry Herrmann, Jolie Frosch, Kylee Thompson, Jessa Frosch and Peyton Burell of state finalist D’Hanis made the 1A squad.
Halstead, Whittingstall, Reagan’s Katie Hill and New Braunfels Canyon’s Courtney Pope were selected to the TGCA Legacy 6A-5A team and McAda, Pluenneke and Gonzalez were tabbed to the 1A-4A squad. The distinction honors seniors.
7: Area athletes named to the Texas High School Coaches Association’s water polo Class 6A super elite team. Bexon Harrison and Will Harrison from state finalist Boerne Champion made the boys team. On the girls side, Ashley Easley, Camila Duarte, Grace Goldhammer and Reeve Sanchez of state semifinalist Brandeis and Alamo Heights’ Meriden Black received the accolade.
Harrison, Harrison, Jake Canales and Emi Martinez-Galarza from Boerne Champion, Clark’s Tristan Clark, Evan Croley and Cole Faux, Brandeis’ Ben Brickmeier and Joshua Nelms and Alamo Heights’ E.J. Gonzalez were chosen for the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-Region IV team. Harrison was MVP, Harrison was both defensive and newcomer of the year, Brickmeier was goalkeeper of the year and Boerne Champion’s Alberto Escalante was coach of the year.
Goldhammer, Durate, Easley, Sanchez, Xitali Silkey, Ally Westendorf and Addison Wilson from Brandeis and Francesa Batiz and Black from Alamo Heights made the girls all-region team. Goldhammer was MVP and offensive player of the year, Easley was the top goalkeeper, Sanchez was the defensive player of the year, and Brennan’s Braelynn Quesada was newcomer of the year. Brandeis’ Sara Perez was coach of the year.

Lone Star’s finest: Cornerstone senior outside hitter Nayeli Gonzalez was named MaxPreps’ Texas volleyball player of the year. Gonzalez, who has signed with Iowa State, finished the season with 573 kills, 66 1/2 blocks and a .377 hitting percentage.
Gonzalez previously was named to MaxPreps’ All-America first team, one of two national publications that she has earned the accolade from. Justwomenssports.com tabbed the 6-foot-1 Gonzalez to its All-America second team.
