From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career digs for Madison senior volleyball player Shavonne Respondek, who accomplished the feat during the Mavericks’ District 28-6A match vs. Madison on Nov. 3. Respondek, a four-year varsity player, recorded her 800th kill earlier this season.
250: Career wins for Marion boys basketball coach Jon Allen, who reached the milestone during the Bulldogs’ 61-43 victory Tuesday over Devine. Allen is in his 13th year at Marion.
15: Catches for Steele senior wide receiver Rhenden Lopez during last week’s District 27-6A football game vs. Judson. Lopez’s 15 receptions are believed to be the fourth-most in area history, equaling the mark established by former teammate Daryn McKnight (vs. Clemens, 2019), Kerrville Tivy’s Karson Valverde (vs. Port Lavaca Calhoun, 2018) and Logan Vick (vs. Steele, 2008), Alamo Heights’ Nik Proctor (vs. Boerne Champion, 2016), Boerne Champion’s Spencer Jarzombek (vs. New Braunfels, 2012) and Michael Moloney (vs. Marble Falls, 2012) and Somerset’s Jacob Hillyer (vs. Luling, 2009).
Boerne Champion’s Chayce Bolli’s 21 catches vs. Alamo Heights in 2016 rank No. 1, while Alamo Heights’ Blake Burke (18 vs. Lockhart, 2019) and Clark’s Kyle Ingraham (18 vs. Corpus Christi Calallen, 2011) are tied for No. 2.
3: Days until the UIL allows soccer teams across the state to conduct their first after-school workouts. Monday is the first day for practice, with the season slated to kick off on Dec. 29. The state tournament is scheduled for April 14-17.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, last year’s season was halted in March, just two weeks before the start of the playoffs, and never resumed.
