From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
9,214: Career passing yards for Brennan senior quarterback Ashton Dubose, who reached the milestone during the Bears’ 34-17 win vs. Austin Lake Travis in a Class 6A Division I third-round contest. Dubose is only 40 yards from surpassing the area record of 9,253 yards set by Somerset’s Stevie Dorman (2007-2010) and has already passed the previous city record of 8,005 yards by Southwest’s Ty Detmer, the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner while playing at BYU and Dorman’s uncle.
Dubose has accounted for 160 touchdowns — 119 passing and 41 rushing — and more than 12,000 yards of total offense during his four seasons on varsity. Brennan (12-1) faces three-time defending state champion Austin Westlake (13-0) in the Region IV-6A Division I final at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Alamodome.
1,000: Career points for East Central senior guard Asia Prudhomme, who reached the milestone during the Hornets’ 54-49 win vs. Azle at the Marble Falls tournament on Nov. 17. Prudhomme had 23 points in the contest.
12: Area volleyball athletes named to TAPPS All-State first team. Antonian’s Kalina Calvillo, Sujeili Mermella and Hailey Garza and Incarnate Word’s Giana Hilliard made it on the Class 6A squad; Boerne Geneva’s Karynn Garrow and Schertz John Paul’s Emily Moon and Maura Asadourian earned spots on the 4A team; Keystone’s Alysa Walker and Sidney Duncan are on the 3A club and Bracken Christian’s Aubrey Wheelock, Emerson Askland and Elena McCrum were selected to the 2A team.
10: Times that the Smithson Valley football team has advanced to a regional final during coach Larry Hill’s 30 seasons at the helm. The Rangers (12-1), who play College Station in the Region III-5A Division I final at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Pfield in Pflugerville, also advanced to this round in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2015. College Station (11-2) was a Class 5A Division I state finalist a year ago, losing to Katy Paetow 27-24 in overtime.
