Hall worthy: Longtime area coach Larry Schaffer is scheduled to be inducted into the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization’s Hall of Honor. The ceremony is on Friday in Galveston, in conjunction with the organization’s annual convention.
He will be the sixth area coach to earn the honor, joining Madison’s Audrey Ambrose (2010), Walter Rule (2014), who coached at MacArthur, Reagan, Clark and Antonian; Alamo Heights’ Bruce Fink (2015), New Braunfels Canyon’s Rob Rush (2016) and Reagan’s Frankie Whitlock (2017).
Schaffer was 343-169-64 during a 30-year high school coaching career, which included stints at McCollum, Smithson Valley, Roosevelt, Churchill and New Braunfels. He led Churchill to four straight UIL state tournament appearances from 1998-2001, winning championships in 1998 and 2001, and guided Smithson Valley, Roosevelt and New Braunfels to regional tournaments. Schaffer also coached the Texas Lutheran University’s women’s team for 10 seasons (2012-2021), and is the program’s all-time winningest coach.
