From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2,000: Career assists for Harlandale junior setter Cayla Reyes, who reached the milestone during the Indians’ Class 5A bidistrict volleyball victory vs. Burbank at Alamo Convocation Center on Tuesday.
1,000: Assists this season for Boerne Geneva freshman setter Ella Grace Owens, who accomplished the feat during the Eagles’ triumph vs. Austin Veritas in TAPPS 3-4A tournament on Oct. 25.
93: Years since Sabinal last finished unbeaten during the regular season in football. The Yellow Jackets are 9-0 heading into Friday’s District 15-2A II showdown vs. Rocksprings (5-2, 4-1). Sabinal, which has clinched no worse than a share of the league title and can capture it outright with a win, finished 11-0 in 1929 under coach Hons C. Richards. The nine wins this season are one more than the Yellow Jackets recorded in the previous four seasons combined.
10: Area athletes named to American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Region IV team, which consists of players from Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Mississippi. New Braunfels Canyon’s Maya Jones, Courtney Pope and Isabell Woo, Alamo Heights’ Hannah Whittingstall and Carolyn Beckel, Brandeis’ Emma Halstead, New Braunfels’ Randi Rush and Ella Vajdos, Smithson Valley’s Lillie Johnson and East Central’s Mckynna Moxley earned selection onto the team.
