From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

Garrow

By the numbers
2,000:
Career kills for Boerne Geneva senior outside hitter Karynn Garrow, who accomplished the feat during the Eagles’ 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 win vs. Austin Hill Country Christian on Tuesday. Garrow, who is committed to Grand Canyon University for beach volleyball, is believed to be one of a handful of area players to reach the mark, joining the likes of Jay’s Demetria Sance, Blanco’s Reagan Rogers, Holy Cross’ Henrianna Ibarra, Warren’s Mikayla Vivens and Boerne Geneva’s Julie Perez. Sance led Jay to the 1991 UIL Class 5A (now 6A) state championship, was a four-time All-American during a record-setting career at the University of Texas, and played for the United States at the 2000 Olympics.

1,000: Career digs for Clark senior outside hitter Kaitlin Whitlock, who reached the milestone during the Cougars’ 25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-10 win vs. Johnson on Tuesday, moving them within one victory of no worse than a tie for the District 28-6A title.

1,000: Career kills for Fredericksburg senior middle hitter Clara Pluenneke, who achieved the mark during the Battlin’ Billies’ four-set triumph vs. East Central on Sept. 20.

35: Consecutive wins for the Pleasanton volleyball team before a four-set loss to La Vernia on Oct. 7. The streak is believed to be the third-longest during a single season in area history. Churchill won 38 in a row en route to winning a state championship in 1985 and Clemens reeled off 36 straight victories on its way to advancing to its first state tournament in 2019.

26: District volleyball matches without a win for Sam Houston before topping Brackenridge 25-21, 25-17, 25-12 on Oct. 7. It was the Hurricanes’ first district win since defeating Brackenridge 25-20, 8-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13 on Sept. 8, 2021.

5: Days until the UIL permits high school girls basketball teams across the state to conduct their first after-school workout on Monday. The regular season kicks off on Nov. 4 and concludes March 2-4 with the state tournament at the Alamodome. Clark in Class 6A and Fredericksburg in 4A advanced to the state semifinals in 2021.
