By the numbers
1,000:
Career kills for Devine junior Rylee Esquibel, who reached the standard during the Arabians’ match vs. Carrizo Springs on Sept. 13. Esquibel’s teammate Avery Cruz collected her 1,000th dig with a 30-dig performance vs. Navarro on Sept. 6.

1,000: Career assists for O’Connor senior volleyball setter Jenna Garza, who reached the mark when the Panthers competed at the John Turner Classic in Pearland in August. Garza is committed to Rollins College in Florida.

800: Career wins for O’Connor volleyball coach Yami Garcia, who reached the milestone during the Panthers’ 25-12, 25-10, 25-18 victory vs. Sotomayor on Tuesday. Garcia, a Harlandale graduate who has been at O’Connor since the school opened in 1998, is the fifth area coach to record 800 wins, joining Cornerstone’s Mike Carter, Poth’s Patti Zenner, Jo Anne Hultgren and Robin Gerlich. Garcia guided the Panthers to the UIL Class 6A state tournament in 2017 and 2018 and the regional tournament in each of the past two seasons.

500: Total wins for Pleasanton volleyball coach Gabriel Aguirre, who reached the mark during the Eagles’ 27-25, 25-11 decision vs. Natalia at the Southwest tournament in Aug. 26. Aguirre is in his 21st season at Pleasanton.

100: Career victories for Stockdale football coach Andrew King, who accomplished the feat during the Brahmas’ 33-7 triumph vs. Yorktown on Sept. 16. King, a Floresville High School graduate, is in his 15th season as a head coach, including his eighth at Stockdale (2004-2007, 2019-present). He previously coached at Poth.

7: Rushing touchdowns for Davenport senior running back Shastin Golden during the Wolves’ 62-42 win vs. Lockhart on Sept. 15. The total is the third-most in area history, trailing only the nine TDs scored by Madison’s Aaron Green (vs. Kerrville Tivy in 2008) and Devine’s Stephen Carrillo (vs. Poteet in 2007) and the eight by Roosevelt’s Bryson Carroll (vs. Lee in 2015), Devine’s Jordan Fraga (vs. Carrizo Springs in 2012) and Clark’s Jerrell Wilkerson (vs. Holmes in 2004). Golden finished with 372 yards on 30 carries.

Area commitments

Megan Hawkins, New Braunfels Canyon volleyball: Louisiana-Lafayette
