From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career kills for Antonian junior outside hitter Kalina Calvillo, who reached the milestone during the Apaches’ 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 win vs. Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday. The 6-foot Calvillo has earned TAPPS All-State honors in each of her first two varsity seasons and has helped the Apaches advance to the regional final each time.
29: Consecutive losses in football for MacArthur before last week’s 42-33 win vs. Holmes. It was the Brahmas’ first triumph since defeating Marshall 23-0 on Aug. 29, 2019. MacArthur aims to continue its winning ways when it travels to play San Antonio Veterans Memorial at 7 p.m. Friday at Rutledge Stadium.
2: Publications that have Cornerstone listed in their national high school volleyball rankings. The Warriors (37-2) are No. 2 in the USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Association Super 25 poll and No. 8 in MaxPreps Top 25 rankings. They were No. 2 in the USA Today/AVCA rankings a week ago and weren’t ranked by MaxPreps. Cornerstone is scheduled to compete Friday and Saturday in the FAST tournament, a 15-team event in Houston that is comprised of private schools.
