By the numbers
400: Career wins for La Vernia softball coach Shelly Hayes, who reached the milestone during the Bears’ 13-2 decision vs. Canyon Lake in Game 2 of their UIL Class 4A bidistrict series. Hayes previously coached at East Central, Copperas Cove, Snyder and Clyde. Her 2006 Clyde team advanced to the UIL Class 3A state tournament.
27: Area athletes scheduled to compete in the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization’s annual All-Star matches on May 14 at Blossom Soccer Stadium.
The event includes many of the state’s top seniors. Region I vs. Region II girls contest is at 1:30 p.m. on the West Field, while the Region III vs. Region IV game is at 3:30 p.m. on the East Field. The boys’ Region I vs. Region II matchup is at 1:30 p.m. on the East Field and the Region III vs. Region IV encounter is at 3:30 p.m. on the West Field.
Boerne’s Landon Murphy and Sam Theiss, Reagan’s Pierce Mnick and Jason Sukow, Harlan’s Tomas Olivares and Avery Richards, Southwest’s Julian Leon, LEE’s Davis Kelly, Smithson Valley’s Brad Dildy, Alamo Heights’ Clayton James Holmes, New Braunfels Canyon’s Josh Conrad and Roosevelt’s Clever Sibomana and Luis Vasquez will compete for Region IV. Boerne’s Michael Strong is on the coaching staff.
On the girls side, Clark’s Hailey Adams and Taylor Tommack, Reagan’s Emma O’Brien, Boerne Champion’s Audrey Riordan, O’Connor’s Maggie Vander Sys, Brennan’s Jordan Bearden, Boerne’s Regina Hernandez, Smithson Valley’s Taylor Swenson, Johnson’s Presley Drawe, Southwest’s Sarahi Fernandez, Fredericksburg’s Bentley Lees, Clemens’ Jordan Bushnell, New Braunfels’ Payton Matthews and Alamo Heights’ Anna Gracia are on the Region IV squad. Reagan’s Kate McCollum, Boerne Champion’s Kara Walters and Boerne’s Jeremy Shannon made up the Region IV coaching staff.
Southlake Carroll’s Matthew Colvin, a Madison graduate, is the Region I girls coach.
4: No-hitters thrown by area athletes in the first round of the UIL softball playoffs. Boerne’s Ava Rodriguez and Madi Dorrow tossed back-to-back no-hitters as the Greyhounds swept Gonzales 10-0 and 17-0 in a Class 4A bidistrict series. Harlan’s Aubrey Flores and Madison Gray combined for a no-hitter in the Hawks’ 11-0 triumph vs. Laredo LBJ in a Class 6A bidistrict encounter. D’Hanis’ Marissa Santos had 12 strikeouts and didn’t allow a hit as the Cowgirls trounced San Perlita 17-0 in a Class 1A bidistrict game. Santos, a Texas Tech signee, also had a three-run home run in the game.

In memoriam: Former Fredericksburg High School softball standout Camry Weinheimer died on May 1 after a battle with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. She was 25.
The family will greet friends from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Stonewall, with a Rosary at 5 p.m. Family will greet friends from 2:30-4 p.m. on Monday in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, with the Mass of Resurrection at 4 p.m.
Weinheimer was named All-State by Texas Girls Coaches Association and District 27-3A MVP as a senior in 2014, and was all-district first team as a junior in 2013 at Fredericksburg. She was a walk-on at NCAA Division II national power Angelo State, starting 33 of 41 games and batting .301 with seven doubles, three home runs and 26 RBIs in 2015 as the team advanced to the Division II South Central regional tournament.
