From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
34: Consecutive district games won by the Judson softball team. The Rockets defeated Wagner 16-1 on April 22 to finish 14-0 in league play for the second straight season. A Class 6A state finalist a year ago, Judson hasn’t lost a league contest since a 4-2 setback vs. New Braunfels on April 5, 2019.
33: Stolen bases this season by Steele junior softball player Elizah Hamilton, a school record. Hamilton surpassed the previous mark of 32, which she established in 2021.
12: Area athletes named to the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization (TASCO) all-state first team. Earning the honor were Reagan’s Sean Mattivi, Jason Sukow and Pierce Mnick in Class 6A, Alamo Heights’ Clayton Holmes in Class 5A and Joe Ballenger of state champion Boerne in Class 4A,
On the girls side, Reagan’s Emily Tredemeyer and Taylor Jernigan and Johnson’s Kamryn Simpson and Presley Drawe made it in 6A. Boerne Champion’s Audrey Riordan and Alamo Heights’ Alexandra Bitter were tabbed in 5A and Fredericksburg’s Bentley Lees was selected in 4A.

Notebook
Family affair: Boerne sophomore Justin Koth won the singles title Wednesday at the UIL Class 4A state tennis championships at Northside ISD Center. He joined his older brother Ryan as state champions. Ryan, now playing at St. Mary’s, won 4A singles titles in 2017 and 2018 and was runner-up in 2019. His bid to win it all as a senior in 2020 was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Success in tennis runs in the family. Shawn Koth, their players’ father, was a Southland Conference doubles champion while playing at Southwest Texas (now Texas State). Jodie Koth, the players’ mother, also played at Texas State and is Boerne’s coach. She previously coached at Marshall, leading it to a district championship in 2000.
Justin Koth was one of two area athletes to win singles state championships. Reagan senior Kyle Totorica won the 6A crown. Totorica was a state finalist as a freshman in 2019 and a state semifinalist as a junior a year ago. COVID halted his chance at winning a title as a sophomore in 2020.
In memoriam: Kevin Hamilton, who was an athlete, coach and administrator in the Northside ISD, died April 19 after a battle with cancer. He was 60. A memorial service was held on Monday.
A member of Clark High School’s first graduating class in 1980, Hamilton played basketball at Texas Lutheran University, then returned to coach at his high school alma mater. He guided the Cougars to a 287-151 record and 10 playoff berths in 13 seasons as head coach, including trips to the Region IV-6A tournament in 1998 and 2007. Five of Hamilton’s former assistant coaches became head coaches — Reagan’s John Hirst, Brandeis’ Marc Gardner, San Antonio Christian’s Jay Keller, Holmes’ James Joseph and Mike Houlihan, who previously coached at O’Connor.
Hamilton is survived by his wife Ronda, a former standout volleyball player at New Braunfels High School and Texas Lutheran who also was a head volleyball coach at Holmes; daughter Haley, a standout setter on MacArthur’s 2010 regional finalist volleyball squad; and son Shawn, who played basketball at MacArthur and Texas Lutheran.
