From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
250: Career wins for Edison softball coach Jennifer Bocanegra, who reached the milestone during the Bears’ 20-0 victory vs. Brackenridge on Tuesday. Bocanegra is in her fifth season at Edison and 14th overall. She previously coached at Harlandale.
100: Career wins for Boerne softball coach Chester Pettibon. He reached the mark during the Greyhounds’ 13-0 triumph vs. Davenport on April 8. Pettibon is in his fourth season at Boerne and last year guided his team to the Region IV-4A final.
100: Career RBIs for Boerne outfielder Reese Wilson. A senior, she reached the standard with a two-run home run on the first pitch of her first at-bat during a win vs. Davenport on April 8.
40: Goals scored this season by Reagan junior Taylor Jernigan, a school record. Jernigan reached the mark with a goal during the Rattlers’ 4-1 overtime win vs. Brennan in the Region IV-6A semifinals on April 8, surpassing the previous standard she shared with Taylor Olson, who tallied 39 goals in 2017. Jernigan, who is committed to Texas A&M, also holds the school record with 90 career goals in only three seasons.
24-2 3/4: Judson junior Anthony Evans III’s distance in winning the long jump on Wednesday at the District 27-6A track and field championships. Evans established a new school record with the effort, topping the 24-1 1/4 that Andrew Gamble sailed in winning the event at the Texas Relays in 2001. Gamble went on to an All-American career at Texas A&M, where he was the Big 12 Conference triple jump champion in 2005 and also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Evans, who is committed to Arkansas for football, also clocked a 10.27 in the 100 meters in prelims.
11: Saves for Boerne freshman goalkeeper Kinsley Sawyer during the Greyhounds’ 3-0 loss to Celina in the UIL Class 4A state semifinals in Georgetown on Wednesday. The total is a 4A state tournament record, eclipsing the previous mark of 10 by Corpus Christi Calallen’s Laramie Miller vs. Midlothian Heritage in the 2021 state final.
9: O’Connor’s spot in the latest MaxPreps’ top 25 national softball rankings. The Panthers (21-1 overall, 14-0 in District 29-6A) moved up three spots from a week ago. They have already clinched a district championship and playoff berth.
7: Goals tallied by the Boerne boys soccer team in Wednesday’s 7-1 win vs. Houston Stafford in a Class 4A state semifinal contest in Georgetown. The total is a 4A record, surpassing the previous mark of five that San Elizario scored vs. Kilgore in the state semifinals in 2015.
Boerne senior forward Sam Theiss scored three goals, also a 4A record. Kilgore’s Elian Torres, Argyle’s Dylan Sadler, Progreso’s Rogelio Zamora, Liberty Hill’s Joey Kipfer and San Elizario’s Edwin Marquez and Marcos Utajara each held the previous mark with two goals.
