From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
39: Goals scored this season by Reagan junior Taylor Jernigan, tying a school record. Jernigan reached the mark with her game-winning 30-yard goal in the Rattlers’ 1-0 decision vs. district foe Johnson in the Class 6A regional quarterfinals on April 1, equaling a standard first established by Taylor Olson in 2017. Olson played on Reagan’s 2014 and 2015 UIL Class 6A state tournament teams and played at Oklahoma State.
19: Strikeouts registered by Judson pitcher Emily Ayala during the Rockets’ 10-0 win vs. Wagner in District 27-6A softball action on March 29. The total is a school record. Ayala, a St. Mary’s signee, faced 25 batters in seven innings, yielding two hits and two walks.
12: O’Connor’s spot in MaxPreps’ latest top 25 national softball rankings. The Panthers (20-1, 13-0 in District 29-6A) have won 15 in a row since a 4-2 setback vs. Klein Collins at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Bryan on Feb. 19. One of the victories — a 2-1 decision vs. Brennan on March 12 — was Coach Caitlin Bollier’s 100th career win. O’Connor has secured a Class 6A playoff berth and no worse than a share of the district title with three games left.
Notebook
On the move: Southwest High School didn’t have to go far to find its new boys soccer coach. Juan Romero, who guided the girls program to an undefeated district title this season, is taking over.
Romero inherits a program that has won four straight district championships and 48 consecutive league contests. The Dragons, who previously was coached by Robert Jaramillo, recorded a state-record 46 wins in a row during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Jaramillo left earlier this season after being named head men’s soccer coach at Texas A&M-San Antonio.
Clemens will also be searching for a new girls soccer coach. Marissa Wood posted on Twitter that it was time for her to “hang up the visor and lay down the whistle.” Wood was 121-49-17 in eight seasons, including seven at Clemens and one at Los Fresnos. In her only season as head coach at Los Fresnos in 2015, she led the Falcons to the Region IV-6A final. They led 1-0 at halftime before falling to Reagan 2-1.
Wood moved to Clemens and led her teams to the playoffs in five of six completed seasons, including three times to the second round. The high mark perhaps came in 2016 when the Buffaloes stunned two-time defending regional champion Reagan 4-3 (6-5 in penalty kicks) in bidistrict, rallying from a 2-0 deficit for their first postseason win since 2000.
