From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
450: Career wins for Alamo Heights girls soccer coach Chris Sharp, who accomplished the feat during his team’s 2-0 decision vs. San Antonio Veterans Memorial on Feb. 8. Sharp, who is in his 22nd season at Alamo Heights and led the Mules to UIL Class 5A state tournament appearances in 2006 and 2018, is the area’s second-winningest public-school girls coach and third overall. Only former Reagan coach Frankie Whitlock and former Saint Mary’s Hall coach Brian Kaestner have more wins.
400: Career victories for Canyon Lake baseball coach Victor Escamilla. He achieved the milestone when the Hawks topped Corpus Christi Miller 13-2 and 15-2 in a doubleheader on March 17. Escamilla previously was head coach at Alice for 17 seasons.
36: Consecutive district games played without a loss for the Smithson Valley girls soccer team. The Rangers blanked Steele 2-0 on March 18 to finish 14-0 in District 27-6A, the second year in a row that they went unbeaten in league play. Smithson Valley, which was 12-0-2 in district in 2021, hasn’t lost a league contest since a 4-1 setback vs. New Braunfels Canyon on Feb. 25, 2020. It responded to the loss with eight straight district wins before the season was halted by the coronavirus pandemic.
29: Goals scored this season by Clemens junior forward Sanai Stewart, tying a school record. Stewart tallied a goal in the Buffaloes’ 2-1 win vs. East Central in the teams’ District 27-6A finale on March 18 to reach the mark that was first established by Brittany Tollison in 2005.
