From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
200: Total victories for Boerne Champion girls soccer coach Kara Walters, who accomplished the feat during the Chargers’ 8-0 decision vs. San Antonio Veterans Memorial on March 4. Walters is in her fifth season at Champion and 12th overall. She previously coached at San Antonio Christian and led the Lions to the 2015 TAPPS state championship.
100: Career goals scored by Southwest senior forward Julian Leon. He reached the mark with three goals during the Dragons’ 9-0 win vs. Harlandale on Wednesday, becoming only the 10th area boys soccer player — and third from Southwest — to do so. Leon joined TMI’s Patricio Parra and Piper Lee, Taft’s Carl Junot and Jimmy Glenn, Clark’s Anthony Esquivel, Southwest’s J.P. Ortiz and Carlos Gonzalez, Edison’s Gerardo Godina and Kennedy’s Luis Torres in the 100-goal club.
100: Career wins for Warren softball coach Melanie Morales, who reached the milestone during the Warriors’ 3-2 victory vs. Taft on March 4. Morales is in her sixth season at Warren and led the Warriors to the Region IV-6A final in 2018.
35: Goals scored this season by New Braunfels Canyon senior forward Josh Conrad, tying a school record. Conrad notched three goals during the Cougars’ 7-0 win vs. Seguin on Tuesday to equal the standard first established by Vince Bueno in 1994.
30: Consecutive losses for the Sam Houston girls soccer team before defeating Lanier 2-1 in a District 27-5A contest on March 4. It was the Hurricanes’ first triumph since a 1-0 win vs. Kennedy on Feb. 3, 2021. They lost their final 11 games in 2021 and the first 19 of this year.
0: Goals allowed during the postseason by the Schertz John Paul II girls soccer team. The Guardians defeated Houston Northland Christian (8-0) in the second round, Sugar Land Logos Prep (5-0) in a regional final, Houston Cypress Christian (2-0) in the state semifinals and Dallas Covenant (2-0) in the state final en route to claiming their second TAPPS Division III state championship in three seasons. They also won in 2020 and were runner-ups in 2021.
Schertz John Paul (24-2), which ended the season on a 23-match winning streak, had almost as many shutouts (16) as goals allowed (19) in 26 contests. The Guardians outscored their opponents 155-19.

New coach: Brandeis assistant volleyball coach Sarah Cardenas Morris has been named the head volleyball coach at Sotomayor High School, the Northside ISD’s newest high school scheduled to open this fall. Morris, who was a standout player at O’Connor and University of Incarnate Word, was integral part of a coaching staff that helped Brandeis capture the UIL Class 6A state championship in November and reach the Region IV-6A final in 2020.
Morris comes from a family of volleyball coaches. Her grandmother, Ninfa Garcia, coached at Harlandale; her mother, Denise Cardenas, coached at Edison and led the Bears to the Region IV-5A tournament in 2010; and her aunt, Yami Garcia, is head coach at O’Connor and guided the Panthers to the 6A state tournament in 2017 and 2018.
