From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,500: Career points for Johnson senior Kendall Dow, who accomplished the feat during Jaguars’ win vs. MacArthur on Feb. 16. A Lubbock Christian signee, Dow had 41 points in Johnson’s 89-67 Class 6A bidistrict loss to Wagner on Tuesday.
450: Career wins for Reagan boys basketball coach John Hirst, who reached the milestone during the Rattlers’ 61-59 triumph over New Braunfels in a Class 6A bidistrict contest on Tuesday. Hirst is in his 12th season at Reagan and 21st overall. He previously was head coach at Los Fresnos and Stevens.
50: Goals scored this season by San Antonio Christian junior forward Kaylee Tarver, a school record. Tarver, committed to Mary Hardin-Baylor, had a goal in the Lions’ 3-1 win vs. Antonian on Monday. She surpassed the previous mark of 49 that forward Hallie Hausman tallied in 2018.
Tarver, who has scored more than half her team’s goals this year, is only the 15th area girls player to score 50 goals in a season, joining Highlands’ Catalina Canizalez, Harlandale’s Ingrid Garcia and Jazmin Baltazar, LEE’s Laura Rodriguez, Bandera’s Nikole Gase, Antonian’s Sarah Hernandez, Saint Mary’s Hall’s Cissy Wafford, Schertz John Paul’s Emilie Rompel, Jefferson’s Yvonne Herrera and Diana Castillo, Boerne’s Alexis Truitt, Kerrville Tivy’s Rebecca Brock and Alamo Heights’ Megan Katona.
50: Consecutive district matches played by the LEE boys soccer team without a loss before a 4-0 setback to Reagan on Feb. 18, 2018. It was the defending Class 6A state champion Volunteers’ first league loss since falling to MacArthur 2-1 on March 23, 2018. LEE went 46-0-4 in district play after the loss.
20: Consecutive district wins for the Warren softball team before Tuesday’s 9-3 setback to Brennan in a District 29-6A opener. It was the Warriors’ first league loss since a 4-3 setback vs. O’Connor on Feb. 28, 2020. Warren was a combined 38-2 in league play over the previous three years, including 16-0 in 2021.
9: Goals scored by Saint Mary’s Hall senior forward Hunter Hoelscher in the Barons’ 11-0 win vs. St. Anthony on Feb. 18. The total is an area record, surpassing the previous mark of eight goals scored by former Madison standout Suzy Derby in a playoff game vs. Edison in 1985.
