From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,500: Career points for Boerne junior Jamie Ruede, who accomplished the feat during the Greyhounds’ win vs. Davenport on Jan. 28.
1,000: Career points for Boerne Champion senior Khiara Flugence. A Texas-Permian Basin commit, Flugence reached the milestone during the Chargers’ game vs. Alamo Heights on Jan. 21.
1,000: Career points for Boerne sophomore Averi Aaron, who met the standard during the Greyhounds’ victory vs. Bandera on Jan. 25.
300: Career wins for Smithson Valley girls soccer coach Jason Adkins, who reached the milestone during the Rangers’ 4-0 triumph vs. Clemens on Tuesday. Adkins is the sixth area girls coach with 300 wins, joining former Reagan coach Frankie Whitlock, former Saint Mary’s Hall’s Brian Kaestner, former Madison coach Audrey Ambrose, Alamo Heights coach Chris Sharp and Elizabeth Sandoval, who coached at Clark, Warren, Highlands, Burbank and East Central.
100: Total goals scored by Saint Mary’s Hall senior Hunter Hoelscher. Hoelscher, a New York University signee, reached the milestone with four goals in Tuesday’s 7-2 win vs. Austin Brentwood, becoming the 42nd area girls player with 100 goals and the third from Saint Mary’s Hall. Cissy Wafford, who was an All-American at Colorado College, and Erin Freeman, who was a standout at Baylor, were the other Saint Mary’s Hall players to accomplish the feat.
2: Area girls soccer teams earning spots in the latest Prep Soccer Fab 50 national rankings. Reagan is No. 19 and Madison is No. 21. Reagan moved up two spots from a week ago and Madison is listed in the rankings for the first time this season.
Notebook
National honor: Brandeis’ Jaylin Gibson was named to Volleyball Magazine’s All-America first team. Gibson, who had 641 kills and 737 digs in helping the Broncos win the UIL Class 6A state championship in November, previously was selected All-American first team by MaxPreps and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Teammate Carlee Pharris received honorable mention on Volleyball Magazine’s prestigious team. She was tabbed to MaxPreps and AVCA All-America first team. Both are TCU signees.
Schedule change: The Region VII-6A and Region VII-5A swimming and diving championships have been moved to Monday and Tuesday because of concern over road conditions from the recent inclement weather. The meets were originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
The Region VII-6A diving competition is now slated for 5 p.m. Monday at Davis Natatorium. Swimming prelims are at 11 a.m. Monday and finals are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Walker Pool. Region VII-5A diving is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alamo Heights natatorium. Swimming prelims are 5 p.m. Monday and finals are 5 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Pool.
The Johnson girls seek their third straight VII-6A title while the Brandeis boys are the defending champion. Alamo Heights captured the VII-5A boys and girls crowns in 2021.
Because of the postponements, the TAPPS state swimming championships’ competition dates have been altered. The Division I meet remains on Wednesday, but the Division III competition is Thursday (previously scheduled was on Monday) and the Division II event is Friday (previously scheduled for Tuesday).
