From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,500: Career digs for S.A. Christian senior Katy Siebert, who reached the milestone during the Lions’ win vs. Incarnate Word on Oct. 29. S.A. Christian has advanced to the TAPPS state tournament in each of Siebert’s first three seasons, including playing for the TAPPS 5A crown in 2019.
1,500: Career assists for La Vernia senior setter Emily Reinhard. She accomplished the feat with 62 assists during the Bears’ five-set victory against Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway in a postseason warmup match on Oct. 26. La Vernia has reached the Region IV-4A tournament in each of the past two seasons.
250: Career wins for Devine volleyball coach Leigh Anne McIver, who reached the mark during the Arabians’ four-set triumph Tuesday over Robstown in a Class 4A second-round playoff match. McIver is in her 13th season overall and eighth at Devine. She previously coached for five seasons at Fort Bend Bush, near Houston.
McIver has guided Devine to the regional tournament in three of her previous seven seasons. The Arabians played Corpus Christi Calallen in a third-round playoff encounter on Thursday in George West.
100: Victories for New Braunfels volleyball coach Heather Sledge during her four seasons at the helm of her alma mater. Sledge reached the standard during the Unicorns’ sweep of Wagner on Oct. 30. An assistant coach on New Braunfels’ 2012 UIL Class 6A state finalist squad, Sledge also was head coach for one season (2016) at Lockhart.
11: Consecutive district volleyball losses for Steele vs. rival Clemens before recording a five-set win on Oct. 30. It was the Knights’ first league win vs. Clemens since Oct. 10, 2014. The series between the teams has been a seesaw of momentum. Clemens won the first two matches between the clubs in 2006, but Steele responded by reeling off 10 straight wins between 2007 and 2014. Clemens won the next 11 meetings from 2014 and 2020, before Steele ended the streak last week.
News and notes

The 6-foot-2 Baese, a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi commit, was lauded after racking up 58 kills (5.8 per set), 13 digs, three blocks and an ace as the Unicorns claimed wins over Steele, Clemens and Wagner. The triumphs propelled New Braunfels into sole possession of second place in District 27-6A, behind Smithson Valley.
National recognition: Judson boys track coach Joel Call, Alamo Heights tennis coach Larry Oxford, Boerne Champion girls tennis coach Jonathan Tate and Alamo Heights cheer coach Ashley Johnson were named Texas coach of the year for 2019-20 in their respective sport by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
