From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
300: Career wins for New Braunfels boys basketball coach David Brawner, who reached the milestone during the Unicorns’ 69-21 victory vs. Alief Elsik at the Brazosport ISD Holiday tournament on Dec. 29. Brawner is a New Braunfels graduate.
100: Career wins for Kerrville Tivy boys soccer coach Reece Zunker, who accomplished the feat during the Antlers’ 4-3 triumph vs. Steele at the Smithson Valley Ranger Classic on Thursday. Zunker, a New Braunfels Canyon alum, guided Kerrville Tivy to the Region IV-5A tournament in 2019.
100: Total wins for Fredericksburg girls soccer coach Logan Minshew, who reached the mark during the Battlin’ Billies’ season-opening victory vs. San Antonio YWLA at the Hill Country Winter Classic on Jan. 6.
29: School-record rebounds for Smithson Valley senior Gabby Elliott during the Rangers’ District 27-6A win vs. South San on Tuesday. Elliott, a St. Mary’s signee, is the program’s all-time leader in points and rebounds.
23: Consecutive matches played without a loss by the Boerne boys soccer team before a 2-0 setback vs. Fort Worth Arlington Heights on Jan. 7 at Alamo Heights tournament. It was the Greyhounds’ first loss since a 3-1 decision vs. LEE at the Alamo Heights tournament on Jan. 7, 2001. Boerne rebounded from that loss to win the UIL Class 4A state championship.
7: Days until the UIL allows high school baseball teams around the state to conduct their first after-school practice. The season opener is Jan. 22 and the state tournament is June 8-June 11. Smithson Valley was a Class 6A state semifinalist a year ago. D’Hanis was a Region IV-1A finalist and Sabinal was IV-2A finalist. TAPPS schools can start working out on Jan. 17 and begin their season on Jan. 31. The state tournament is May 17-21. Bracken Christian was a Division V state semifinalist a year ago.
2: Area girls teams in Prep Soccer’s Fab 50 national rankings. Reagan (5-1) is No. 16 and Boerne Champion (2-0-2) is No. 48. Champion defeated Southlake Carroll in penalty kicks on Thursday after the teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation and tied defending UIL Class 6A state champion Flower Mound and longtime power Plano West last week at the National Elite Prep Showcase in Dallas.
Reagan’s lone setback was to Southlake Carroll in penalty kicks on Friday at the North East ISD tournament. Reagan rallied from a 2-0 deficit during the final 11 1/2 minutes of regulation to tie it at 2-2 and force a shootout. Carroll prevailed 10-9 on penalties.
