From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
60: Points scored by Lytle junior Jordan Balderaz during the Pirates’ 123-40 win Tuesday vs. Stockdale. Balderaz’s career-high outing is believed to be only the fourth time an area boys player has scored 60 points in a game, joining Troy House, who did it while playing for Ingram and Leakey, East Central’s Tony Terrell and Kerrville Tivy’s Jon Chambers.
House scored an area-record 70 points and 68 in games during the 1989-90 season. He also had outputs of 64 and 62 during the 1988-89 season while playing at Leakey. Terrell had 62 points vs. Highlands during the ’87-88 campaign and Chambers notched 60 points vs. Holy Cross in December 1978.
41: Points scored by Wagner senior guard and Arizona State signee Austin Nunez during the Thunderbirds’ 82-70 loss to McKinney in both teams’ season opener on Nov. 12. The 41 points by Nunez, a four-star prospect, are a school record, surpassing the previous mark of 40 by Jalen Jackson during a 104-83 win vs. Harlandale on Feb. 8, 2019. Jackson was a standout guard on the Thunderbirds’ UIL state finalist teams in 2017 (Class 6A) and 2019 (Class 5A).
4: Area athletes selected to participate in the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program on Dec. 27-30 in California. Cornerstone’s Taylor Anderson and Alamo Heights’ Hannah Whittingstall were tabbed for the Under-18 camp and Alamo Heights’ Grace Carroll was chosen for the U-17 session. Former New Braunfels Christian standout Hailey Hamlett, now a freshman at TCU, was named to the U-20 beach event.
The beach program will be contested at famed Manhattan Beach in California, and one of the coaches will be legendary player Holly McPeak. The indoor camp will be in Anaheim, Calif.
