H.S. mailbag: News and notes from around San Antonio area sports landscape

FacebookTweetPin

From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
2,000:
Career assists for Boerne junior setter Madisyn Jones, who reached the milestone during the Greyhounds’ Class 4A bidistrict match vs. Pleasanton on Nov. 2. Jones had 38 assists, seven digs, four kills, one ace and one block in a four-set loss.

1,000: Career digs for Holy Cross senior Alyssa Barrera, who accomplished the feat during the Knights’ 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 win vs. The Woodlands Legacy in a TAPPS 4A second-round match on Tuesday. Holy Cross plays San Antonio Lutheran at 4 p.m. Saturday at Saint Mary’s Hall in a regional final, with the winner advancing to the TAPPS state tournament.

850: Total wins for Poth volleyball coach Patti Zenner, who reached the mark during the Pirettes’ Class 3A bidistrict triumph vs. Yoakum on Nov. 1. Zenner, who has led Poth to nine UIL state championships in 28 seasons, is the area’s second-winningest coach, trailing only Cornerstone’s Mike Carter.

5: Area athletes named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-America team. Brandeis seniors Jalyn Gibson and Carlee Pharris, both TCU signees, made the first team. New Braunfels Canyon senior Kyla Malone, who is headed to Incarnate Word, was on the third team. Antonian’s Olivia Arredondo and Smithson Valley’s Bekah Williams, a Louisiana Tech signee, received honorable mention. Nearly 1,200 volleyball players from across the nation were nominated for the honor.
Gibson, Pharris, Williams, Malone and Arredondo also were tabbed for the AVCA All-Region 4 squad along with Antonian’s Mackenzie Tijerina and Smithson Valley’s Maddie Dennis, Jaci Mesa and Alexa Pyle. The team was comprised of players from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
