From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
7,841: Career passing yards for Boerne senior quarterback Rashawn Galloway, who reached the mark during the Greyhounds’ 41-6 win vs. La Vernia on Oct. 29. Galloway’s total is No. 4 in area history and first in school history, surpassing the previous mark of 7,058 by Brooks Klutts (2015-2017). Galloway and the Greyhounds captured the District 14-4A-I championship and are idle this week.
1989: The year that Fox Tech last won a playoff volleyball match before outlasting Crystal City 25-12, 25-10, 25-27, 15-25, 17-15 in a Class 4A bidistrict contest on Tuesday. Thirty-two years ago, the Buffaloes stunned district champion Judson 15-11, 15-12 in bidistrict, then pushed eventual regional finalist and state power Austin Westlake to the limit in the second round before falling 15-8, 13-15, 15-11.
Back then, only the top two teams from each district advanced to the playoffs, matches were best-of-three format, sets were played to 15 points, and a team could score only when it served. Four teams now advance to the playoffs, matches are best-of-five, sets are played to 25, and a team can score on every play, regardless who serves.
1,000: Career kills for Alamo Heights junior outside hitter Hannah Whittingstall. A SMU commit, Whittingstall reached the milestone during the Mules’ win vs. Seguin on Oct. 26.
40: Wins this season for the New Braunfels Canyon volleyball team, becoming the 17th area school to accomplish the feat. The Cougarettes swept Jefferson in Class 5A second-round match on Thursday and joined Reagan, Churchill, Johnson, New Braunfels, La Vernia, Navarro, Incarnate Word, Poth, Clark, Brandeis, O’Connor, Alamo Heights, Holy Cross, Clemens, Cornerstone and Antonian in the 40-win club.
2: Publications that have Brandeis listed in the top five of their national volleyball polls. The Broncos are No. 4 in USA Today/AVCA Super 25 rankings and No. 5 in MaxPreps’ top 25 poll. Brandeis (41-2) plays Round Rock in a Class 6A second-round encounter at 7:30 p.m. Friday at New Braunfels Canyon High School.
