From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career kills for Boerne Champion senior outside hitter Marissa Drange, who accomplished the feat during the Chargers’ match vs. Buda Johnson on Sept. 24. Drange, a Southern Utah commit, reached the milestone in only three seasons. She missed the 2020 campaign recovering from shoulder surgery.
100: Career wins for Brennan football coach Steve Basore, who reached the mark during the Bears’ 58-0 victory Thursday over Stevens. Basore, a Marshall graduate, has been Brennan’s only coach during its 12-year history and led the Bears to the UIL Class 4A (now 5A) Division I state final in 2013 before falling to Denton Guyer. Brennan has made 11 straight playoff appearances.
3-0: Churchill volleyball team’s record in five-set matches during District 28-6A play. The Chargers rallied to edge MacArthur 25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-12 Tuesday, getting big performances from Emma Helmke (19 kills), Alyssa Garcia (38 assists and 21 digs) and Katie Felts (46 digs). Churchill also won in five sets vs. Madison on Aug. 31 and Johnson on Sept. 10, rallying from a 0-2 deficit to prevail in the latter.
The Chargers (21-12 overall, 6-3 in 28-6A) play Madison (22-13, 5-4) at 8 p.m. Friday at Littleton Gym in a contest that likely will have playoff implications.
