From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
1,000:
Career assists for Madison junior setter Rylee Davis, who reached the milestone during the Mavericks’ five-set win vs. Johnson in District 28-6A action on Oct. 16.

1,000: Assists for Brandeis junior setter/outside hitter Carlee Pharris in 1 1/2 seasons with the Broncos. She accomplished the feat during her team’s match vs. Madison on Oct. 13. Pharris, a TCU commit, played her freshman season at Reagan before transferring and has 1,160 assists overall.

650: Career wins for New Braunfels Canyon volleyball coach Heather Sanders, who reached the mark during the Cougarettes’ District 26-5A victory Tuesday over Buda Johnson. In her 22nd season at Canyon, Sanders has guided the Cougarettes to four UIL state tournament appearances, the last coming in 2015.

100: Wins for S.A. Christian volleyball coach Robin Gerlich during her four seasons at the school. Gerlich recorded the milestone during the Lions’ victory vs. Incarnate Word on Oct. 13. She has 822 overall wins during a 34-year career that includes stints at La Vernia, Holmes, Churchill, Seguin and New Braunfels. Gerlich has led Churchill, Seguin and New Braunfels to the UIL state tournament and S.A. Christian to the TAPPS state tournament.

7: Years that have passed since the Sam Houston volleyball team has started 2-0 in district play. The Hurricanes have opened District 27-5A competition with wins over Lanier and Kennedy. In 2013, they topped Poteet and Hawkins to begin 2-0.

Notebook
Hitting the hardwood:
Boys basketball teams across the state are scheduled to begin after-school workouts on Oct. 28.
The UIL’s season is scheduled to kick off on Nov. 13 and end with the state tournament March 11-13, 2021, at the Alamodome. A year ago, Brandeis (6A), Wagner (5A) and Cole (3A) each advanced to state. Cole was the only area team to play its state semifinal contest before the event was halted because of COVID-19 concerns.
TAPPS teams came hold their first practices on Nov. 2. The season opens on Nov. 12 and the state tournament is slated for March 4-6, 2021.

On the backburner: The UIL League Legislative Council passed a proposal Monday to delay the start of water polo for a year because of COVID-19.
Water polo was slated to begin as a pilot program during the 2021-22 school year but not appears as if it will start in 2022-23.
The University Interscholastic League, which oversees extracurricular in public schools in Texas, also said it plans to have separate swimming and diving state meets for boys and girls because of the COVID pandemic.
The girls event is scheduled for Feb. 19-20 and the boys is penciled for Feb. 26-27 at the University of Texas’ Jamail Swimming Center in Austin.
