2: Area softball teams earning national rankings. Warren (24-0) is No. 6 in USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 poll and No. 8 in MaxPreps. Judson (28-1) is No. 16 in MaxPreps.
Judson defeated Buda Hays 10-1 Thursday in Game 1 of a Class 6A second-round series. Game 2 is at 6 p.m. Friday at Judson. If necessary, a decisive Game 3 will start 30 minutes after conclusion of Game 2. Warren opens a best-of-3 series vs. Los Fresnos at 7:30 p.m. Friday in San Diego. Game 2 is at 1 p.m. Saturday. If necessary, a decisive Game 3 would start 30 minutes after end of Game 2.
Leander (31-0) is No. 1 in MaxPreps and No. 7 in USA Today. The Lions play Southwest in a one-game Class 5A second-round series at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s University.
8: Area athletes named to the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization (TASCO) All-State first team. Making the list in Class 6A were LEE goalkeeper Joseph Batrouni and midfielder Henry Bowland, and Clemens defender Kassen Dilworth. Southwest midfielder Julian Leon made the 5A squad, while Boerne defender Scott Hettie, midfielder Landon Murphy and forward Rowdy Fritz and Fredericksburg goalkeeper Peter Stenberg earned spots on the 4A club. No area girls player earned first-team honors.
LEE’s David Rogers (6A), Southwest’s Roberto Jaramillo (5A) and Boerne’s Michael Strong (4A) were tabbed as Region IV coaches of the year for their respective classification. Austin Vandegrift’s Sharis Lachappelle, a former Johnson standout, was the Region IV-6A girls coach of the year.

500: Career victories for Reagan baseball coach Chans Chapman, who accomplished the feat with the Rattlers’ 15-0 decision over Roosevelt on Monday. Chapman previously coached at Garrison. He has led Reagan to the UIL Class 6A state tournament two of the past three completed seasons and three of the past six. Reagan has advanced to 17 straight postseason berths, excluding the 2020 season which was halted by the coronavirus pandemic.
700: Wins for Blanco baseball coach Bryan Wyatt during his 37 seasons at the school. Wyatt, a Jay graduate, reached the mark with the Panthers’ 12-0 victory over Ingram Moore on April 27. Wyatt has 718 wins during a 39-year career, which included a stint at Class 2A Maud in East Texas. Wyatt guided Blanco to the UIL state tournament in 1988, 2007 and 2019.
Notebook
Top Cat: Amy Wagner has been named head volleyball coach at Clark High School. An assistant at the school for nearly a decade, Wagner was promoted to fill the vacancy left when Melissa Miller left to become assistant athletic coordinator/head volleyball coach at Smithson Valley.
Wagner, a MacArthur graduate, was a standout setter at Nicholls State. She graduated as the program’s all-time leader in assists (3,745) and was inducted into school’s hall of fame in 2017.
Miller coached at Clark, her alma mater, for five seasons, leading the Cougars to the regional finals in 2018 and 2019. A member of Clark’s 2003 state championship team, she previously coached at Holmes and has an overall record of 319-157 in 12 seasons. Miller took over at Smithson Valley for Courtney Patton, who was hired as Pieper High School’s assistant athletic coordinator and head volleyball. Pieper is Comal ISD’s newest high school and is scheduled to open next fall. Varsity competition won’t begin until fall 2022
Soccer showcase: The Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization’s all-star matches are scheduled to be contested May 15 at Blossom Athletic Center.
The top boys and girls players in Region I will play the top players from Region II at 1:30 p.m., while Region III squares off vs. Region IV at 3:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5, and the stadium will be cleared between games.
