From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2: Number of organizations that have the LEE boys soccer team listed No. 1 in their national rankings. The Volunteers, who blanked Rockwall-Heath 2-0 a week ago to capture the UIL Class 6A state championship, sit in the top spot in the United Soccer Coaches and Top Drawer Soccer rankings.
Clemens, which fell to LEE 3-1 in the third round, is No. 6 in the Top Drawer and Boerne, which nabbed the Class 4A state crown with a 3-1 decision vs. Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis, is No. 22.
A community-wide celebration will be held for the LEE boys squad at 7:15 p.m. on April 28 at Comalander Stadium. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and state championship apparel and merchandise will be sold.
2: Area teams earning spots in this week’s MaxPreps’ Top 25 national softball rankings. Warren is No. 10 and Judson is No. 22. Both clinched undefeated district championships with wins in their league finales on Thursday, with Warren (22-0) blanking Harlan 10-0 and Judson (25-1) topping Wagner 23-3.
Warren moved up two spots from a week ago, while Coach Theresa Urbanovsky’s Judson squad made its debut in the rankings.
51: The margin of victory for the Davenport girls golf team at the Region IV-4A tournament in Victoria. The Wolves, in their first season of competition, carded a two-day score of 689. La Vernia was second at 740 and Fredericksburg was third (757).
All three are headed to the UIL Class 4A state tournament May 10-11 at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle.
Davenport, which also won a district title, had all five of its golfers finish in the top 25, including three — Belle Asbury (seventh) and Madeline Pate and McKenna Martin (tied for 10th) — in the top 10. Amber Bassett was 17th and Amy Schoenenberger was 25th.
200: Career wins for Madison softball coach Laurie Friesenhahn, who reached the milestone during the Mavericks’ 6-3 victory vs. Clark on Tuesday.
Notebook
Nation’s finest: Clark’s Elise McGhee and Reagan’s Maddie Correa were both named to Prep Volleyball’s All-America team. They were the only area players to make the team. Both received honorable mention on Under Armour All-America squad in November.
Correa, who graduated a semester early and is at Texas Tech, helped lead Reagan to the UIL Class 6A state semifinals, where they lost in five sets to eventual state champion Katy Seven Lakes. She holds school records for digs in a career (2,249) and season (856 in 2019).
McGhee, a Baylor signee, guided Clark to the Region IV-6A final in 2018 and 2019. She notched 175 kills and 41.5 blocks last fall as the Cougars advanced to the second round.
Landmark honor: Smithson Valley softball coach Amanda Wolf-Schramm was named an at-large appointment to the Texas High School Coaches Association board of directors, becoming the first woman to earn the distinction.
Wolf-Schramm will begin her tenure in July at the conclusion of the THSCA Coaching School and Convention in San Antonio. She is in her second season at Smithson Valley and previously coached at Bastrop and Elgin, her alma mater. She guided Elgin to 11 district championships.
