From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2: Area high school boys soccer teams that are one win from advancing to the UIL state semifinals. LEE (25-1) plays Austin Lake Travis (24-0-4) in the Region IV-6A final at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Dripping Springs. Boerne (18-1-1) faces Hidalgo in IV-4A final at 7 p.m. Friday at Cabaniss Stadium in Corpus Christi.
Winner of 20 in a row, LEE is in the regional final for the third straight season and the fifth
time overall. Boerne, which is unbeaten in its last 19 games, is in the regional final for the fourth time and seeks its third trip to the semifinals.
12: Warren’s ranking in this week’s MaxPreps top 20 national softball poll. The Warriors (17-0) moved up three spots from a week ago and are the only area team to make the list.
15: Innings played before Coach Sandra Hernandez’s Southwest squad defeated Eagle Pass Winn 2-0 Tuesday in a District 28-5A softball contest. The game is believed to be the fourth-longest in area history.
Game 3 of a 2007 second-round playoff series between Marshall and Austin Bowie — which had future University of Texas All-American pitcher Blaire Luna — and a 2005 bidistrict game between Southwest and MacArthur both lasted 18 innings, while Incarnate Word’s 2004 playoff win vs. Beaumont Kelly went 16 innings.
100: Career wins for Brackenridge baseball coach Bryan Adams, who reached the mark during the Eagles’ 13-1 victory vs. Jefferson on March 17.
250: Victories for Alamo Heights baseball coach Jason Thompson, who accomplished the feat during the Mules’ 7-4 triumph vs. San Antonio Veterans Memorial on March 27.
