From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
150: Victories for New Braunfels softball coach Andy Schmid. He reached the mark during the Unicorns’ 12-3 triumph vs. Incarnate Word at the Seguin tournament on March 5.
200: Career wins for MacArthur softball coach Mike Alfaro, who accomplished the feat during the Brahmas’ 16-2 decision vs. Johnson on March 23. Alfaro is in his 11th season overall and previously coached at Southside and Cornerstone.
350: Wins for Blanco softball coach Michael Seales, who reached the standard during the Panthers’ 20-2 victory vs. Ingram on March 19.
Notebook
On the move: Comal ISD has named Courtney Patton as volleyball coach and assistant athletic coordinator at Pieper High School, the district’s fifth high school. The school is scheduled to open next fall. The Warriors will play a junior varsity schedule in 2021 and begin varsity competition in 2022.
Patton moved over from Smithson Valley, where she held the same titles. She guided the Rangers to three UIL volleyball playoff berths during her four seasons at the school, including their first undefeated league crown since 1985 this past fall.
Patton previously coached for 11 seasons at Alamo Heights, leading the Mules to the playoffs in each season and to the Region IV-5A tournament in 2010, 2014 and 2016. A Churchill graduate, Patton has a 410-188 overall coaching record.
A search for Patton’s replacement at Smithson Valley has begun. The Rangers were 17-3 in 2020 and should be among the area’s top teams in 2021.
