From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
6: Girls soccer teams in District 28-6A that had double-digit wins. Reagan led the way with 19, followed by Clark (17), Madison (14), Johnson (12), LEE (13) and Brandeis (11). There are nine schools in the league.
Reagan won the district crown, Clark was second, Madison was third and Johnson and LEE tied for fourth. Johnson earned the final playoff spot via a head-to-head tiebreaker.
7: Hits allowed by Natalia softball pitcher Abigayle Woodson in her last six starts. She had three no-hitters, a one-hitter, a two-hitter and a four-hitter, striking out 58. Woodson, a junior, had four games with double-digit strikeouts, including 15 vs. Hondo on March 3.
16: Warren’s ranking in the latest MaxPreps top 25 high school softball national poll. The Warriors (14-0) moved up a spot. They are the lone area team in the poll.
42: Consecutive wins for the Southwest boys soccer team. The streak is the longest in area history — boys or girls — and is believed to be the longest in state history and among the 15 longest in national history, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations record book.
The area’s previous longest winning streak was 25, established by the 1997 Churchill girls and 2017 Harlandale girls teams. Southwest’s last loss was a 7-1 decision to Pharr Valley View in the Region IV-5A semifinals on April 12, 2019.
The Dragons were 21-0-0 a year ago when the season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. They are 21-0-0 this season heading into Friday’s Class 5A bidistrict home match vs. Brackenridge.
