From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
7: Consecutive seasons in which the Boerne girls soccer team has won a district championship. The Greyhounds are 57-1-2 in league play during that span, with this year’s district finale vs. Wimberley on March 15 still left. The team had one district game remaining a year ago when the season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Even more impressive about the streak is that Boerne’s last five district crowns have come with a different coach on the sideline: Bert Atilano (2017), Jose Copa (2018), Michael Strong (2019), Savannah Bryant (2020) and Jeremy Shannon (this season).
18: Warren’s ranking in the latest MaxPreps top 25 national softball poll. The Warriors (11-0 overall and 5-0 in District 29-6A), coached by Melanie Morales, have outscored their opponents 96-7. They have registered seven shutouts, including one in each of their last five outings. Warren has notched two no-hitters and allowed only one hit in their last three games.
100: Career wins for Johnson boys soccer coach David Johnson, who reached the milestone during the Jaguars’ 1-0 victory vs. Clark on Monday. Johnson is in his second season at Johnson and previously coached at Jay.
200: Victories for Johnson softball coach Brian Sandera, who accomplished the feat during the Jaguars’ 9-2 decision vs. Pearsall at the Seguin tournament on March 6. Sandera is in his first season at Johnson and previously coached at Holmes.
450: Career wins for Antonian baseball coach David Collenback, who reached the mark during the Apaches’ 7-3 triumph vs. Johnson on March 5. Collenback is in his first season at Antonian and previously coached at O’Connor and Marshall during a 23-year career.
700: Overall wins for Blanco baseball coach Bryan Wyatt, who met the standard during his team’s 7-3 decision vs. Marble Falls at the Llano tournament on March 4. Wyatt is in his 34th season at Blanco, where he has led the Panthers to 683 wins and three trips to the UIL state tournament (1988, 2007 and 2019) and 36th overall. He also coached at Maud, near Texarkana.
