From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
100: Career goals for Schertz John Paul II junior forward Emilie Rompel, who accomplished the feat by scoring seven goals during the Guardians’ 10-0 win vs. New Braunfels Christian on Jan. 25.
The seven goals are believed to be the second-most in a game in area girls history, tying Rompel with Roosevelt’s Jessyca Figueroa Delgado, who scored seven goals in back-to-back games vs. St. Anthony and TMI in 2017.
Rompel became the 39th area girls player with 100 goals, joining Harlandale’s Ingrid Garcia and Jazmin Baltazar, Saint Mary’s Hall’s Cissy Wafford and Erin Freeman, Bandera’s Nikole Gase and McKenna Mangold, Churchill’s Mandy Heintz and Kate Harrison, O’Connor’s Tameka Sumter and Sarah Yoder, Boerne’s Mary Kate Snelling, Lexi Truitt, Emily Blaettner, Brianna Barrera and Paige Marcell, Clark’s Kori Catlin and Tracey Timmerman, LEE’s Melinda McClure, Antonian’s Sarah Hernandez, Highlands’ Catalina Canizalez, East Central’s Lori Bigger, Taft’s Adriana Hutson, Kerrville Tivy’s Rebecca Brock, San Antonio Christian’s Hallie Hausman and Brooke Spencer, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills’ Maddie Morris, Incarnate Word’s Emily Phillips, MacArthur’s Brooke Hopkins, Boerne Geneva’s Katelyn Davis, Memorial’s Veronica Rodriguez, Boerne Champion’s Kaitlin Moore, Jefferson’s Yvonne Herrera, Alamo Heights’ Sophia Connelly, Pleasanton’s Madelyn Bird, Brennan’s Ammber Valverde, St. Anthony’s Jean Deason, Marshall’s Tayler Niemeyer and New Braunfels’ Michelle Whitley.
37: Consecutive district girls soccer matches played by Alamo Heights without a loss before Friday’s 2-1 setback vs. Boerne Champion. The Mules were 36-0-1 since a 3-0 loss to Boerne Champion on Feb. 16, 2018. Alamo Heights rebounded from the loss to advance to the UIL Class 5A state tournament, falling to Grapevine 4-3 in the semifinals after yielding the decisive goal with 70 seconds remaining.
5: Consecutive TAPPS 3-I titles won by Central Catholic and Antonian girls. The four-time defending state champion Buttons secured their latest district crown with Tuesday’s 5-2 win over Austin St. Dominic Savio. Antonian locked up a fifth straight undefeated league championship with a 4-1 decision vs. San Antonio Christian on Tuesday.
4: Days until the TAPPS swimming championships get underway at North East ISD’s Bill Walker Pool. The Division III meet is Feb. 8, with the girls competition starting at 7:30 a.m. and the boys at 1:30 p.m. The Division II contest is Feb. 9 and Division I is Feb. 10, with the girls event at 7:30 a.m. and boys at 1:30 p.m. on each day.
The San Antonio Christian girls have won the past two D-II team titles.
