From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career points for McCollum senior basketball player Alexis Martinez, who reached the milestone during her team’s District 28-5A contest vs. Southside on Tuesday.
200: Career wins for Harlan boys soccer coach Bert Atilano, who reached the mark during the Hawks’ 6-0 victory vs. Taft on Jan. 22. Atilano is in his third season at Harlan and previously was coach of the both the boys and girls teams at Boerne, leading the girls to UIL Class 4A state final in 2017.
100: Wins for Brennan girls soccer coach Zoila Hurley during her eight seasons at the school. Hurley accomplished the feat during the Bears’ 6-0 triumph on Tuesday vs. Stevens. Hurley, who previously coached at East Central, led Brennan to a district title in 2014 and playoff berths in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Bears only needed a win vs. Holmes or a loss by Taft vs. Brandeis in the District 28-6A finale to lock up a postseason spot a year ago before the season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
5: Days until the start of Region VII swimming and diving championships. The Class 6A competition is Feb. 3 and 5 and the 5A meet is Feb. 4 and 6 at North East ISD’s Walker Pool and Davis Natatorium.
The top six finishers in each event at district meets advance to regionals. Area district meets began last week and are scheduled to conclude this weekend.
The UIL state championships are scheduled for Feb. 19-20 (girls) and Feb. 26-27 (boys) at NEISD’s two facilities.
4: Goals scored by LEE senior defender Kameron Kloza during the Volunteers’ 7-1 decision vs. MacArthur in District 27-6A action on Monday. Kloza, a Texas Tech signee, is believed to be only the eighth LEE player during the past 32 years to record four goals in one game, joining Laura Rodriguez Moerdyk (multiple times during 1989 season), Melinda McClure Toole (vs. Churchill, 1989), Micah Williams (vs. Roosevelt, 2015), Ariana Sifuentes (vs. Holmes, 2016), Savannah Vathy (vs. Southside and St. Anthony, 2017), Jenevieve Jackson (vs. Highlands, 2019) and Isela Zertuche (vs. South San, 2020).
