From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
250: Career wins for Steele girls basketball coach Jeffery Chatman and San Antonio Lutheran girls basketball coach Jeff Sanders. Sanders reached the standard during the Mustangs’ 42-33 decision Tuesday vs. Schertz John Paul II. Chatman, who previously coached at Del Rio and Lubbock Estacado, reached the mark during Steele’s 72-35 win vs. South San on Jan. 12.
100: Career goals for San Antonio Christian senior forward Brooke Spencer, who reached the milestone with five goals in the Lady Lions’ 7-2 victory vs. Corpus Christi Incarnate Word on Tuesday.
Spencer is the 37th area girls player to reach the 100-goal mark, joining Harlandale’s Ingrid Garcia and Jazmin Baltazar, Saint Mary’s Hall’s Cissy Wafford and Erin Freeman, Bandera’s Nikole Gase and McKenna Mangold, Churchill’s Mandy Heintz and Kate Harrison, O’Connor’s Tameka Sumter and Sarah Yoder, Boerne’s Mary Kate Snelling, Lexi Truitt, Emily Blaettner, Brianna Barrera and Paige Marcell, Clark’s Kori Catlin and Tracey Timmerman, Antonian’s Sarah Hernandez, Highlands’ Catalina Canizalez, East Central’s Lori Bigger, Taft’s Adriana Hutson, Kerrville Tivy’s Rebecca Brock, San Antonio Christian’s Hallie Hausman, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills’ Maddie Morris, Incarnate Word’s Emily Phillips, MacArthur’s Brooke Hopkins, Boerne Geneva’s Katelyn Davis, Memorial’s Veronica Rodriguez, Boerne Champion’s Kaitlin Moore, Jefferson’s Yvonne Herrera, Alamo Heights’ Sophia Connelly, Pleasanton’s Madelyn Bird, Brennan’s Ammber Valverde, St. Anthony’s Jean Deason, Marshall’s Tayler Niemeyer and New Braunfels’ Michelle Whitley.
100: Career wins for Clemens girls soccer coach Marissa Wood, who reached the mark during the Buffaloes’ 2-0 victory vs. Madison on Jan. 14 at North East ISD Showcase. She previously coached at Los Fresnos and led the Falcons to Region IV-6A final in 2015.
52: Consecutive district girls soccer matches played by Boerne Champion without a loss before Tuesday’s 1-0 setback vs. New Braunfels Canyon. The Chargers were 50-0-2 since a 2-1 loss to Alamo Heights on Feb. 10, 2017, and had won 31 straight league contests.
21: Times this season that an area soccer team has scored 10 or more goals in a game. Schertz John Paul II girls squad has accomplished the feat four times, while the Smithson Valley and Davenport girls and Southwest boys teams have done so twice. Davenport, in its first varsity season, notched an area-high 14 goals vs. San Antonio YWLA on Jan. 5 and 10 vs. Fox Tech on Jan. 13. Smithson Valley tallied 10 goals vs. MacArthur on Jan. 7 and Killeen Harker Heights on Jan. 14. Southwest netted 12 goals vs. Uvalde on Jan. 15 and 11 vs. Memorial on Jan. 14. The Warren boys squad amassed an area-best 15 goals vs. Sam Houston on Jan. 16.
5: Goals scored by Reagan sophomore forward Taylor Jernigan during the Rattlers’ 5-2 win vs. Clemens at the North East ISD Showcase on Jan. 16. The five goals are a school record, eclipsing the previous mark of four by Taylor Olson (vs. Roosevelt in 2017) and Alex Burton (vs. LEE in 2009). Olson played on Reagan’s 2014 and 2015 UIL Class 6A state tournament teams and signed with Oklahoma State. Burton was the leading goal-scorer on the Rattlers’ 2009 state tournament squad that was ranked No. 1 in the nation. She played at Rice.
5: Years that had passed since Judson last defeated Wagner in boys basketball before Tuesday’s 91-83 overtime win. The Rockets had lost six straight to Wagner since a 71-55 triumph on Jan. 29, 2016.
