From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
400:
Career wins for LEE boys soccer coach David Rogers, who reached the milestone during the Volunteers’ 1-0 decision Tuesday vs. Reagan in a District 28-6A opener. He is the fourth area boys coach to collect 400 wins, joining Alamo Heights’ Bruce Fink, Southwest’s Hector Sandoval and Antonian’s Walter Rule.
Rogers, who has a 400-105-42 overall record, previously was head coach at Boerne High, Boerne Champion and Denton Ryan and an assistant at Granbury. He led Boerne to a UIL state title in 2006 and Boerne Champion to the top prize in 2011. He was an assistant on Granbury’s 1999 state championship-winning squad and also led Denton Ryan (2001) and LEE (2019) to state-tournament appearances.

350: Wins for Alamo Heights girls soccer coach Chris Sharp during his 20 seasons at the school. He reached the mark during the Mules’ 2-1 season-opening victory vs. Beeville at the Pleasanton tournament on Jan. 7.

117: Career goals for TMI senior forward Patricio Parra, the most in area boys soccer history. A Cornell signee, Parra accomplished the feat with three goals in a 12-1 victory vs. Saint Mary’s Hall on Tuesday, surpassing the previous mark of 115 set by Southwest’s J.P. Ortiz. Parra, who a year ago tallied 59 goals — second-most in area history — entered this season tied with former Taft standout Carl Junot for second place with 105.

41: Consecutive district girls soccer games played by Clark without a loss before Tuesday’s 2-0 setback vs. Brandeis. The Cougars were 38-0-3, winning three straight district titles, since a 2-1 loss to Brandeis on Feb. 24, 2018.

7: Days until the UIL allows baseball teams across the state to conduct their first after-school workout. The first day for practice is Jan. 22. The season kicks off on Feb. 22, with the state tournament scheduled for June 9-12. The 2020 season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

5: Days until area teams and athletes begin competing in district swimming and diving championships. The District 27-6A diving competition kicks off things on Jan. 20 at Block Aquatic Center. The District 28-6A diving meet is Jan. 21 at Block, while the 27-6A and 26-6A swimming meets and the 26-6A, 25-6A, 29-6A, 26-5A and 18-5A diving events are at North East ISD.
The 28-6A swimming meet is Jan. 23 at Northside ISD, the 28-5A contest is Jan. 26 at San Antonio ISD Natatorium, the 26-5A and 25-5A meets are Jan. 27 at NEISD, and the 18-5A championships is Jan. 29 at NEISD. The 29-6A meet is Jan. 30 at NEISD.
The Region VII-6A championships are Feb. 3 and 5 and the Region VII-5A meet is Feb. 4 and 6 at NEISD.
The UIL state championships are Feb. 19-20 (girls) and Feb. 26-27 (boys) and are scheduled to be contested at NEISD’s Walker Pool and Davis Natatorium.
A year ago, Alamo Heights finished third and Boerne Champion was 10th in Class 5A boys standings. Alamo Heights was 10th and Boerne Champion was 11th in the girls race. Reagan was 11th and Johnson was 12th, with only a point separating them, in the 6A girls competition. The Smithson Valley boys were 15th.

Notebook
In memoriam:
Bill Walker Jr., a longtime aquatics coordinator and coach in the North East ISD, died Jan. 7. He was 86.
Walker served as aquatics coordinator and head high school coach in NEISD from 1970-1976 and 1982-2001, retiring after the end of his second stint with the district. He also coached in Mercedes, Harlingen and McAllen.
NEISD named its pool in Walker’s honor in 2005. The facility was demolished in 2017 and rebuilt as part of a $14 million bond. The grand opening was Nov. 20, 2019, and Walker was a guest speaker.
