From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2007: The year that the New Braunfels Canyon boys soccer team last failed to make the UIL playoffs before missing out this season. The Cougars had a run of 17 straight seasons in the playoffs but finished in fifth place this year in District 29-6A. They entered the final week of the regular season with an opportunity to advance. Led by long-time coach Rob Rush, a member of the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization (TASCO) Hall of Honor, New Braunfels Canyon’s playoff-qualifying streak began in 2008 when it advanced to the regional final. The Cougars twice won via the old 35-yard shootout and once in overtime during the run, before falling to Cedar Park Vista Ridge 3-1.
200: Career wins for Marion baseball coach Tim Tesch, who reached the mark during the Bulldogs’ 15-2 victory vs. Long Creek on Tuesday. Tesch is in his 11th season at Marion and has led his teams to the playoffs in every year (the 2020 season was halted before the completion of the regular season due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Bulldogs had a 45-game district winning streak that dated to the 2019 season snapped a week ago during a 10-8 setback vs. Jourdanton.
150: Career goals for Davenport senior Rylee Reisdorph, who reached the milestone by tallying five goals in the Wolves’ 10-0 win vs. Austin Northeast in a Class 4A Division I bidistrict contest on Friday. Reisdorph, who is signed with Central Arkansas, is believed to be only the seventh player in San Antonio-area girls soccer history to accomplish the feat. She joined Harlandale’s Ingrid Garcia, Jefferson’s Arianna Solis, Antonian’s Sarah Hernandez, Schertz John Paul II’s Emilie Rompel and Madeline Seebeck, and San Antonio Christian’s Kaylee Tarver in the club.
55: Consecutive district losses for the Jay softball team before snapping the drought with Tuesday’s 8-4 triumph vs. Southwest Legacy. It was the Mustangs’ first league win since defeating Taft 14-2 on April 22, 2021.
30: Seasons played by the Seguin girls soccer team before earning its first UIL playoff berth. Under first-year coach Ray Gutierrez, the Matadors finished in third place in District 27-5A. They lost to Jay 3-2 in a Class 5A Division I first-round match on Friday. Jay scored twice in the final 15 minutes to prevail.
11: Area soccer players selected to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) All-State first team. Central Catholic forward Caple Esquivel, midfielder Brandan Thomas, defender John Paul Vallejo and goalkeeper Jaime Heeren made it for Division I. San Antonio Christian midfielder Caleb Schuetze and defender Brody Barnard were tabbed in Division II. Schertz John Paul II forward Antonio Vazquez, midfielder Antonio Gonzalez and defender Travis Migura made the Division III squad. On the girls side, The Atonement forward Abigail Casey and Boerne Geneva midfielder Kathleen Friesenhahn made it in Division III.
6: Goals scored by McCollum senior Alita Uresti during the Cowgirls’ 8-3 win vs. Edison in a Class 5A Division II bidistrict soccer contest on Thursday. The total is believed to be the second-most in a playoff match in San Antonio-area girls history, equaling the amount that Brandeis’ Alyssa Amaya tallied vs. East Central in 2014. Madison’s Suzy Derby is first on the list with eight goals vs. Edison in 1985.
