From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career points for Southwest senior Travis Hune, who reached the milestone during the Dragons’ Class 5A Division I regional semifinal game vs. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial on Feb. 25.
1,000: Total points for Floresville senior Ryland Parker, who reached the mark during the Tigers’ Class 4A Division I bidistrict contest vs. La Vernia on Feb. 18.
450: Career wins for Canyon Lake baseball coach Victor Escamilla, who reached the standard during the Hawks’ 4-1 triumph vs. Gregory-Portland at the Sinton tournament on Feb. 20. Escamilla is in his eighth season at Canyon Lake and previously was head coach at Harlingen South and Alice and an assistant at Reagan.
100: Goals for Canyon Lake junior forward Savanna Oberholtzer, who reached the mark during the Hawks’ 4-1 win vs. Marble Falls on Tuesday. A Lubbock Christian commit, Oberholtzer is the first Canyon Lake player to accomplish the feat and the 57th player in San Antonio-area girls history to do so. The milestone was the second in as many weeks for Oberholtzer, who tallied a school-record seven goals in a 9-1 win vs. Bandera on March 4. She held the previous mark of six goals, which she scored vs. Bandera on Feb. 9, 2024.
100: Career wins Clemens boys soccer coach Myles Salas, who reached the plateau during the Buffaloes’ 1-0 decision vs. New Braunfels Canyon on Feb. 28. Salas is in his sixth season with the Buffaloes and led them to district championships in the previous five campaigns.
100: Career goals for McCollum senior Alita Uresti, who attained the mark with two goals in the Cowgirls’ 2-0 win vs. MacArthur on Feb. 27. Uresti, who has 39 goals this season, is the 56th player in San Antonio-area girls soccer history to accomplish the feat and the first in her school’s history.
90: Consecutive district wins for the Southwest boys soccer streak before having the streak snapped during a loss to Southwest Legacy in a penalty-kick shootout on March 7. The winning streak is believed to be one of the longest, if not the longest, in U.S. prep history. Southwest Legacy prevailed 12-11 in penalty kicks after the teams played to a scoreless draw in regulation. The setback was Southwest’s first in league play since falling to Southside 1-0 on Feb. 22, 2019.
50: Consecutive district matches played by the Taft girls soccer team without a loss before Tuesday’s 1-0 setback vs. O’Connor. The Raiders, who have advanced to the Region IV-6A tournament in each of the past two seasons, went 46-0-4 following a 1-0 loss to Brennan on March 1, 2022.
26: Goals scored this season by Steele junior Darriyn Morales, a school record. Morales reached the total during the Knights’ 3-1 win vs. New Braunfels Canyon on March 11, surpassing the previous mark of 24, which he established a year ago.
