From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career points for Southwest Legacy junior Garnelle Zor, who reached the milestone during the Titans’ 56-50 win vs. Southwest on Jan. 31.
200: Career wins for Clark girls soccer coach Diana Driggers, who accomplished the feat during the Cougars’ 2-1 decision vs. Clemens on Jan. 14. Driggers is in her 15th season at Clark.
100: Totals wins for Harlan girls soccer coach Geselle Vela, who reached the mark during the Hawks’ 3-1 triumph vs. Marshall on Jan. 22. Vela is in her first season as head coach at Harlan and previously was head coach at Highlands and Veterans Memorial.
53: Consecutive district matches played by the Boerne boys soccer team without a loss before falling to Pieper 4-2 on Friday. The Greyhounds had gone 52-0-1 in league play following a 2-0 setback vs. Fredericksburg on Feb. 21, 2020. They won two UIL Class 4A state championships (2021, 2022), were state finalists (2024) and regional finalists (2023) during the span.
34: District matches played by the Clemens boys soccer team without a loss before suffering a 4-2 setback vs. Buda Johnson on Friday. The Buffaloes went 28-0-6 following a 3-1 loss to Smithson Valley on Feb. 1, 2022, and won four of five straight league crowns.
7: Goals scored by Steele junior forward Londyn Johnson vs. East Central on Jan. 31, a school record. Brittany Flores is believed to have established the previous school mark with five goals during an 8-0 win vs. Corpus Christi King on Feb. 28, 2014. Johnson became only the 10th girls player in San Antonio-area history to tally seven goals in a game.
Notebook
Top Dog: Longtime Judson assistant coach Joel Call has been named head football coach/athletic director at Marion. He replaced Ryne Miller, who left after leading the Bulldogs to a 46-33 record, three district titles and six playoff appearances in seven seasons.
Call has been at Judson for the past 20 seasons, helping the Rockets reach the UIL Class 6A state finals in 2005 and 2007 and state semifinals in 2014 and 2015. He went 2-1 as interim head coach in 2021. A Judson graduate and member of the Rockets’ 1996 state finalist squad, Call has been the school’s head boys track coach for the past 11 years and was an assistant when Judson captured the 2013 state championship.
